Stable Isotope Evidence for Early Modern Human Diet in Southeastern Europe: Peştera cu Oase, Peştera Muierii and Peştera Cioclovina Uscată

Stable Isotope Evidence for Early Modern Human Diet in Southeastern Europe: Peştera cu Oase, Peştera Muierii and Peştera Cioclovina Uscată

Author(s): Erik Trinkaus,Andrei D. SOFICARU,Adrian Doboș,Silviu Constantin,João Zilhão,Michael Richards / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2009

Keywords: Radiocarbon dating;Early Upper Paleolithic;Peştera cu Oase;Peştera Muierii;Peştera Cioclovina Uscată;Middle Paleolithic;Early Upper Paleolithic;

During the process of direct radiocarbon dating of four Early Upper Paleolithic modern humans from the Romanian sites of Peştera cu Oase, Peştera Muierii and Peştera Cioclovina Uscată, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) were measured from their bone collagen. These individuals have δ 13 C values similar to other Late Pleistocene humans. Their δ 15 N values are well within the carnivore trophic level range, among the higher of the Middle Upper Paleolithic values, and significantly greater than those of preceding Middle Paleolithic and Initial Upper Paleolithic Neanderthals. These data suggest a shift towards a broader faunal dietary spectrum among these early modern humans, despite western and eastern European archeological evidence and human functional morphology indicating little change in faunal exploitation from the Middle Paleolithic to the Early Upper Paleolithic.

Radiocarbon Dating and Faunal Stable Isotopes for the Galeria Principală, Peştera Muierii, Baia de Fier, Gorj County, Romania

Radiocarbon Dating and Faunal Stable Isotopes for the Galeria Principală, Peştera Muierii, Baia de Fier, Gorj County, Romania

Author(s): Adrian Doboș,Andrei D. SOFICARU,Erik Trinkaus,Aurelian Popescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2009

Keywords: Upper Paleolithic;Middle Paleolithic;cave bears;Late Pleistocene;diet;

Radiocarbon dates and stable isotope signatures are presented for six faunal samples from the Galeria Principală, Peştera Muierii. Despite stratigraphic incertainties, the samples should date from the earlier Upper Paleolithic of this portion of the site to ~30,000 14 C BP and the Middle Paleolithic levels to ~41,000 to ~47,500 14 C BP, with the deeper levels being beyond radiocarbon age (>52,000 14 C BP). These dates therefore imply that the Pleistocene human occupation of the site consists of a relatively late Early Upper Paleolithic (or very early Middle Upper Paleolithic) and a fairly late Middle Paleolithic. Stable isotope analysis of the dated samples reinforces the ecological flexibility of Late Pleistocene cave bears.

New research at the Paleolithic site of Mitoc Valea Izvorului (Botoșani county). The 2003-2004 seasons.

Nouvelles recherches sur le gisement paléolithique de Mitoc Valea Izvorului (dép. de Botoşani) Fouilles 2003–2004

Author(s): Alain Tuffreau,Vasile Chirica,Sanda Balescu,Paul Haesaerts / Language(s): French / Issue: 5/2009

Keywords: Middle Palaeolithic;Upper Palaeolithic;transitional industry;loess;Romania;

Previous studies of the Mitoc-Valea Izvorului site (Prut Valley, Romania) have suggested the presence of a transitional industry between Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. During recent excavations (2003-2004), new chrono-stratigraphical investigations together with OSL sediment dating have demonstrated the presence of Middle Palaeolithic artefacts and Upper Palaeolithic artefacts within distinct stratigraphical units. Stratigraphical correlations have been made with the nearby Malu Galben site including Aurignacian and Gravettian.
