Regionalism And Regional Autonomy In Romania

Regionalism And Regional Autonomy In Romania

Author(s): Andrea Carteny / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2013

Keywords: Regionalism; Regional Autonomy

Szeklerland (in Hungarian Székelyföld) is a historical region of Transylvania, a Hungarian province given to Romania by the Versailles peace treaties after the First World War. With a population consisting of an overwhelming proportion (80 percent) of Szeklers (Székelys), it constitutes an ethnic enclave within the territory of Romania. The Szeklers are a separate ethnic group amongst the Hungarians; they arrived at the same time as the Magyars (or perhaps even a little earlier) in the Carpathian basin and settled in the centre of Transylvania.

I borrowed this idea from BBC Radio 4 many years ago. Like all the best ideas, it’s very simple. There was no equivalent in Russian for listeners in what was then the USSR, so I adopted the format after I joined the London bureau of Radio Liberty. My early guests were all Russian-speaking Brits who knew and appreciated the genre.

Introducing The Poems Of Sándor Márai

Introducing The Poems Of Sándor Márai

Author(s): Tibor Fischer / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2013

Keywords: Poems; Sándor Márai

“I am not a poet”, Márai insisted. That would seem to settle it, but it has to be remembered that Márai had exceptionally high standards and he was playing with prosody at a time of exceptional fecundity in Hungarian poetry. He was the contemporary of Attila József (considered by some as the greatest of all Hungarian poets), Sándor Weöres, Miklós Radnóti, János Pilinszky, poets who are the match of any of the better known names of the last century such as Auden, Eliot, Celan, Pound, Larkin.

Encounters With A Grey Eminence

Author(s): J. Horvath / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2013

Keywords: Hungary; Communism

My most vivid glimpse of Domokos Szent-Iványi dates from the second half of 1947. We are making our rounds, deep in conversation, side by side in the enclosed courtyard of the Central Collecting Prison of Budapest. It is a huge redbrick complex situated, quite fittingly, next to the city’s biggest cemetery in Rákoskeresztúr, in a far corner of which Communists would bury their executed adversaries in unmarked graves. Within the complex, we were sequestered in the legendary separate section called Kisfogház, the Little Prison, housing some 400 inmates, all of them political convicts.

A Teardrop In The Sea

A Teardrop In The Sea

Author(s): Tamás Kabdebó / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2013

Keywords: hungary; soundtracks; pictures

On 15 June 2013 the new wing of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth Library was officially opened. The building now has the capacity for one million printed books, journals, and countless other texts, pictures, drawings and soundtracks, materials with which, between 1983– 2000, I had endeavoured to fill this house of Celtic and universal knowledge for Irish university students and staff alike. Like Moses who once reached the edge of the Promised Land, I tried my best to have this brilliant super-modern extension built during my time but in vain. Eventually the completion of the new addition was entrusted to Cathal, my successor and an excellent Irishman of 40 years of age, who finished in 2013 what I had started 30 years ago.

Our Dysfunctional Relationship

Our Dysfunctional Relationship

Author(s): Sándor Romano Rácz / Language(s): English / Issue: 05/2013

Keywords: Roma; Hungary

I have lived in Pest County for the last 16 years. For 10 of them, I lived to the west of the Danube, but then felt compelled to move, due to the subtle yet unavoidable racism. Now, I am in my seventh year of living here in the eastern part of the county, where anti-Roma racist slurs are open and widespread – at the hairdresser, the market, in the stores, on the train, in the doctor’s waiting room – in short, anywhere there are people. And since most people do not know that I belong to that group, they speak their slurs in my presence – even in my home, or in my car, as when my wife asked me to drive someone home from the market in a neighbouring town.

1944-1945 Vanished town

1944. / 1945. Nestali grad

Author(s): Emil Jurcan / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1-2/2013

2000-2008. False image of the city

2000. / 2008. Lažna slika grada

Author(s): Emil Jurcan / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1-2/2013

Sadašnji prijedlog generalnog plana prolazi kroz niz preinaka, dorada i rasprava, a karakterizira ga potpuni raspad klasične metode planiranja koja postaje neprimjenjiva u današnjim gospodarsko/ političkim uvjetima.

Komunal

Forbidden coast from tomorrow - the park!

Zabranjena obala od sutra — park!

Author(s): Zoran Angeleski / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1-2/2013

1935. / 1939. Civilizacija rimskih temelja

Author(s): Emil Jurcan / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1-2/2013

U 30–im godinama fašistički režim pokreće niz radova u cilju razvoja istarskog gospodarstva; 1933. godine započinje izgradnja vodovoda, 1937. godine gradi se rudarski grad Raša, a 1942. godine Podlabin.
