Premarital sex and postponing a decision to marry and decision to have children

Premarital sex and postponing a decision to marry and decision to have children

Przedmałżeńskie współżycie seksualne a odraczanie decyzji o małżeństwie i rodzicielstwie

Author(s): Weronika Juroszek / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2012

Keywords: premarital sex; decision to marry; decision to have children; selection of the spouse; fertility

In this publication it is analyzed how premarital sex influences postponing a decision to marry and decision to have children. Basic reasons of postponing marriage are also presented. It is proved that premarital sex delays such a developmental task as selection of the spouse. It is explained that the decision to marry is influenced by the following factors resulting from premarital sex: cultural acceptance of sex outside marriage, trauma due to interruption of previous sexual relations. Longer period of fertility in case of men than women is also considered.

Childfree by choice in a confrontation with the fundamental values of marriage. The perspective of catholic moral theology

Bezdzietność z wyboru w konfrontacji z podstawowymi wartościami małżeństwa. Perspektywa katolickiej teologii moralnej

Author(s): Konrad Józef Glombik / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2012

Keywords: childfree by choice; procreative function of marriage; vocation of spouses to parenthood; nature of spousal love; responsible parenthood; marriage as an important social value

Contemporary socio-cultural changes and the mentality associated mainly with individualism have a significant impact on marriage and family. This is manifested not only in the change of the concept of marriage and family, but also in delaying the decision of marriage, alternative forms of marital life, acceptance of divorces and infidelity, as well as transformation in the understanding and realization of the procreative function of marriage. The report published by CBOS in January 2010 presenting the results of the studies on the procreation attitudes of Poles shows that the vast majority of respondents under 30 years of age are planning to have an offspring, but there are also those who do not intend to have children. There are many reasons for this approach to procreation, and the phenomenon of voluntary exclusion of children from marital life is referred to as childfree by choice. Although childlessness affects nowadays many marriage couples, and it has its roots in various biological and social reasons, being childfree by choice is a conscious attitude of exclusion offspring from marital life, in a situation where parenting is possible, based on different motives and not just for some defined period of time in marriage, but for the whole martial life. The phenomenon of childfree by choice is the subject of researches of various sciences, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies and philosophy. The childfree by choice, understood as a specific attitude to formation of marital life, is also an interest of moral theology, especially of its important branch which is the morality of marriage and family life. The following text is an attempt to assess the problem of the childfree by choice from the perspective of catholic moral theology and its confrontation with the core values associated with the meaning of marriage and family life. One of the fundamental values of marriage is the vocation of spouses to parenthood, the negation of which is the attitude to the childfree by choice. Another problem that arises in connection with the conscious resignation by spouses of parenting is the understanding of the nature of spousal love, which is the foundation of marriage. Childfree by choice is an attitude justified by the spouses with different reasons, including responsibility, which makes it important to confront the issue from the perspective of the concept closely connected with married life, namely responsible parenthood. Marriage and the fulfillment of its procreative function is for the catholic moral theology an important social value, consequently also from this point of view the attitude of conscious choice of childfree in marriage was analyzed.

Between ideal and morality. Family and its socio-moral problems and challenges in Romania

Between ideal and morality. Family and its socio-moral problems and challenges in Romania

Between ideal and morality. Family and its socio-moral problems and challenges in Romania

Author(s): Stefan Iloaie / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2012

Keywords: family; Romania; traditional family; “modern” family; religion; education; modernity

In Romanian society, family was one of the fundamental “institutions”, strongly supported by religious convictions, by tradition, stability and need of social safety. Inside a family man is educated from a religious point of view, he receives the model of behaviour he needs in society, he discovers the first social relations. Until today, these characteristics have been preserved in many families in Romania and they represent the foundation of a good training for young people for beautiful life, well anchored in the realities of the society. After the fall of communism in Romania at the end of 1989 and especially when the first manifestations of the globalization of secularization occurred, family was and still is confronted with new and unparalleled challenges. It has lost a lot of its value, since young people consider that they can live together without an engagement blessed by the Church and legislated by the state. Instead of assuming the responsibility of becoming a family, young people have now other priorities in life: career, their own happiness, social and economical fulfillment. These are the reasons why the average age of contracting a marriage is very high. The model of the monoparental family seems to be now in fashion, since more than 20% of children in Romania live in such a family. There is an increasing number of divorces, concubinages, abortions, people who neglect the education of their own children, of people who do not get married any more. Some of the members of Romanian families live and work abroad – the official number is 900,000 – and this situation has serious consequences upon family itself and especially upon the children who remain at home. All these realities have placed family, in the last 10 years, in the center of attention of all the institutions in Romania which have a social and educational impact. Churches especially engaged themselves in supporting family, in protecting it and rendering its value again. They hope that young people and members of present families will discover and assume the values of the most important institution of moral and social education.

BOOSTING UNDER QUANTILE REGRESSION – CAN WE USE IT FOR MARKET RISK EVALUATION?

Author(s): Katarzyna Bień-Barkowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: boosting; quantile regression; GARCH models; value-at-risk

We consider boosting, i.e. one of popular statistical machine-learning meta-algorithms, as a possible tool for combining individual volatility estimates under a quantile regression (QR) framework. Short empirical exercise is carried out for the S&P500 daily return series in the period of 2004-2009. Our initial findings show that this novel approach is very promising and the in-sample goodness-of-fit of the QR model is very good. However much further research should be conducted as far as the out-of-sample quality of conditional quantile predictions is concerned.

LABOUR FORCE PARTICIPATION AND FAMILY POLICIES IN EUROPE: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY

Author(s): Agnieszka Gehringer,Stephan Klasen,Dorota Witkowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: labour force participation; family policies; age-group specific effects

The aim of our research is the identification of factors affecting labour force participation (LFP) in the EU in the years 1998-2007 with a specific focus made on family policies. We perform the analysis separately for men and women, taking into account differences in the LFP levels and patterns observable among age and country groups. Our main findings suggest that generally the family policies are relevant for the age groups 15-24 and 40-59 in determining their LFS, while less influential for the age group 25-39. Nevertheless, significant differences in the sign and the magnitude of the influence exist between specific policy instruments.

THE INFLUENCE OF PENSION FUNDS ON THE POLISH CAPITAL MARKET

Author(s): Dorota Żebrowska-Suchodolska,Andrzej Karpio / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: assets; bonds; household savings; stocks; open pension funds

Open pension funds have existed on the Polish financial market since 1999. They are institutions which create this market by investing part of their members’ superannuation. So, it is difficult to overestimate their significance from a social point of view. Authors have presented results of quantitative investigations of the share of pension funds in this market from 2001 to 2012. Main attention is concentrated on WSE because pension funds invest in stocks and bonds (government, municipal etc.) listed on the Polish ex-change and these securities are the principal components of their portfolios.

Author(s): Krzysztof Kompa,Tomasz Wiśniewski / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: open pension funds (OFE); pension system reform; portfolio effectivity; investment strategies

The program for pension system reform, launched at the beginning of 1997 in Poland, was called by its authors “Security through Diversity”. This title emphasizes that pension reform, which is designed to guarantee security for the insured, has to combine pay-as-you-go pillar together with mandatory, fully funded pillar as well as voluntary, funded pillar. This paper discusses consequences of the changes implemented in the year 2013 and consequently analyzes the changes in the composition of the pension funds’ portfolio, in particular the prohibition of investing in debt securities issued and guaranteed by the State Treasury.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN EXIT RATES FROM UNEMPLOYMENT IN POLAND

Author(s): Joanna Małgorzata Landmesser / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: gender differences; exit rates from unemployment; duration models; hazard

The behaviour of women and men in the labour market is diverse. Traditionally, men have closer attachment to the labour market. Women, however, have more family responsibilities. In the paper, we analyse the exit rates from unemployment for each sex separately, and find out that the effects of the explanatory variables in estimated duration models depend upon gender. We begin our study with a single risk hazard model. These estimations are extended to a competing risks model with two destinations: employment and non-participation.

Author(s): Witold Luciński / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: private equity; emerging market; correlation; private equity funds

The Polish private equity sector is a relatively new segment of the Polish financial market, as it emerged only at the beginning of the 1990s. In terms of capital, it is strongly linked to firms from outside Poland, especially European and American ones. Moreover, international firms are also significant capital donors for private equity funds in Poland. Thus, the question arises as to how these facts influence the market behaviours of Polish private equity funds. The study is based on data from 2000–2012, with Poland compared to the European market.

Author(s): Kesra Nermend,Danuta Miłaszewicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: good governance; aggregate measure of governance quality

The type of governance applied in an economy as well as its quality deter-mines the quality of life. Decisions that result in the improved governance quality should be preceded by operationalisation of this category and by the related research. The purpose of this article is to present the concepts of governance and good governance as well as to propose the application of an aggregate measure of the governance quality constructed on the basis of the World Bank indices in the time cross-sectional analysis of 28 EU member states over the period of 2002-2012.

IMPRECISE RETURN RATES ON THE WARSAW STOCK EXCHANGE

Author(s): Krzysztof Piasecki / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: Normal Inverse Gaussian distribution; uncertainty risk; imprecision risk; fuzzy present value

The return rate in imprecision risk may be described as a fuzzy probabilistic set [Piasecki, 2011a]. On the other side, in [Piasecki, Tomasik 2013] is shown that the Normal Inverse Gaussiandistribution is the best matching probability distribution of logarithmic returns on Warsaw Stock Exchange. There will be presented the basic properties if imprecise return with the Normal Inverse Gaussian distribution of future value logarithm. The existence of distribution of expected return rate is discussed. All obtained results may be immediately applied for effectiveness analysis at risk of uncertainty and imprecision [Pi-asecki, 2011c]
