Bilingual volume published in cooperation with the Embassy of Italy in Poland and with the Italian Institute of Culture to celebrate the centenary of the Italian-Polish diplomatic relations (1919–2019).Texts by the renowned Italian and Polish authors (translated from Italian to Polish or vice versa) are divided into two parts: “Diplomacy, economy, history” and “Art, film, literature, theatre”. Such division allows to follow the Polish-Italian bonds in different fields, from translation and performance of the Italian tragedies on the Polish stages, to cooperation with the FIAT company. There is also reflection on the Polish-Italian relations in the difficult interwar period and during the Second World War. In this context one text has exceptional significance - that of Vincenzo Mario Palmieri, Italian anatomic pathologist and a member of the international commission that examined the Katyń massacre in 1943.The volume not only for the Italophiles but also for all those interested in the history of the 20th century and in the issues of the international relations.

Philology – Ecology. Lines of Connection

The aim of this article is to find connections between two disciplines crucial for ecocriticism,i.e. between philology and ecology. The author of the paper analyzes the transformationof ecocriticism’s attitude towards broadly defi ned philology. It is argued that thoughphilology, understood as a discipline focused on language and text, was marginalized duringthe early phases of ecocriticism, it has recently been revalued as the trend’s philosophical background which determines the ecocritical view on the extratextual world and environment. What is more, the philological practice – broadly defined as work with/focus on atext and the practice of reading – is considered to be the ecological practice. The authorfurther argues that another issue which enables one to combine philology with ecologyis the notion of awareness, which is a key concept for American transcendentalists and, as a consequence, Anglo-American ecocriticism, as well as for philology, which is hereperceived, with reference to Friedrich Nietzsche, as the philology of the world (and notas the philology of the book).

This article aims to provide a preliminary presentation of the idiosyncratic philological-philosophical idioms of two thinkers: Agata Bielik-Robson and Adam Lipszyc. The author presents their concepts on the grounds of post-secular thought; he also suggests that we see Bielik-Robson’s and Lipszyc’s writings as examples of the so-called “messianic philosophy of philology,” which is based on the notion of literature as the ultimate space for negotiations between theological and secular languages in modernity. Drawing on deconstruction, the messianic philosophy of philology develops a set of micrological interpretational tools, which enable an approach to reading literary text that is sensitive towards the presence of transcendental traces in immanent discourses. This hermeneutical procedure is founded on the “messianic idea” – according to that concept, the linguistic gestures of a singular subject are inspired by hope for a new, just language that is to come, as well as hope for the arrival of a revitalized, redeemed world.

Cretan adaptations of Italian models in 17th-century drama

The article discusses the permeation of cultures – Eastern (Greek) and Western (Latin) – on Crete during the last two centuries of the Venetian rule (i.e. the 16th and 17th century). The author analyses the emergence of drama written in the colloquial Cretan dialect but based on Classical – Renaissance models, which is an original contribution of Veneto-Cretan cultureinto Modern Greek Literature. The readers are given an opportunity to familiarize themselves with this relatively unknown literary and cultural phenomenon. Passages of dramas that have not been previously translatedas well as their thorough descriptions are provided, including Ioannis Andreas Troilos’s tragedy King Rhodolinos (1647), one of the most interesting examples of creative and original adaptations of Western tradition, and a comedy Fortunatos (1666-1669) by Marc Antoine Foskolos.

The author reaches for two classic novels of late 19th-century psychological realism: Gustav Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. The article, a result of the author’s fascination with the psychological portraits of the two unhappy women, presents the circumstances of creation of both novels, masterpieces of European literature. It offers a thorough comparative analysis of the two title characters. Several situations from both novels are analyzed to explain the behavior of Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina towards Love and Fate. The article indicates the sources of longing for a great feeling and suffering related to misunderstanding and social ostracism. It exposes various mechanisms that lead to suicide. Emma’s tragicomism is analyzed in reference to the phenomenon of “bovarism”; more-over, it is proven that Anna Karenina has become a cultural myth.

The paper discusses Judith, a character in Juliusz Słowacki’s drama Ksiądz Marek (1843), in the context of biblical tradition. First, the biblical Book of Judith, including its Old Polish and Romantic renderings, is discussed. Then, Słowacki’s interpretation of Judith’s story is presented. Słowacki combines the traditional and the romantic visions of the character, who has been interesting for the artists for ages because of her contradictions: she is a female warrior, pious and noble, although she fights in a controversial way that includes ruse. Słowacki’s Judith lives in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and – similarly to other romantic renderings – is a complicated, individualized character with her internal conflicts more important than political battles. Although the heroine fails and her city falls, she eventually wins in the spiritual dimension and reconciles the contradictions – in accordance with the Medieval and Early Modern interpretations. For Słowacki, similarly to the traditional reading, the story of Judith is a historiosophic parable about human contribution to the God’s plan.

This paper looks at the rich, and largely unexplored, correspondence of Jan Józef Baranowski, an insurgent in the November Uprising, a refugee in France and England, an accomplished inventor and the author of a two-volume bilingual dictionary (Anglo-Polish lexicon, 1883; Słownik polsko-angielski, 1884). Baranowski’s letters, primarily those addressed to Leonard Niedźwiedzki, allow one to investigate both his lexicographic conceptions and working methods. As it has turned out, the design of his dictionary was innovative, but Baranowski had experience neither in lexicography nor foreign language teaching. It is thus unsurprising that, despite his eff orts to promote the endeavour in the immigrant community and beyond, methodological flaws and idiosyncrasies signifi cantly decreased its attractiveness in the eyes of potential users.

In such situation philosophy can be a useful field of reflection insofar as it offers a postmodern vision of the world taking into consideration the sensibility of a subject which is shaped by postmodern practices.
