Chyba truizmem będzie twierdzenie, że nie można badać nazw własnych w izolacji, a onomastyka to nauka czerpiąca z osiągnięć innych nauk. I tak np. zbadanie ukształtowania terenu jakiejś miejscowości może doprowadzić do zupełnie innych wniosków co do pochodzenia jej nazwy; podobnie odczytanie pierwszych zapisów nazwy rzuca światło na jej etymologię. Bez korzystania z dokonań innych dyscyplin nie powinno się orzekać także o pochodzeniu nazwisk.

The present source edition contains the Articles decided for the Chocim military confederation, which are to guard our fair and good reputation [Artykuły postanowione do konfederacyjej chocimskiej żołnierskiej, które są stróżem uczciwego i dobrej sławy naszej]. At the beginning of the paper, the author provides basic information about military confederations in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, presenting the most important literature pertaining their genesis at the turn of the 16th and 17th century and the relevant legal regulations of the time. The actions of the king and nobility aimed at counteracting such unions within the military were also briefly described. In order to depict the historical background of creation of the presented source, the history of the Lwów confederation was sketched – however, with focus on the moment of its formation and drawing up the published text. Moreover, the author also pointed out the most significant differences between the regulations set by the Articles of War binding the soldiers and the Articles enacted by the confederates. Finally, the introductory section includes a short description of the published text and speculations about the fate of the original document. The last and most important part of the present paper is the source text itself.

The article discusses, both polemically and critically, a few instances in which Maciej Świerkocki, in his new translation of James Joyce’s Ulysses, renders the novel’s puns into Polish. In order to indicate other possible translations in this regard, the author of the article quotes from previous Polish version by Maciej Słomczyński and the Czech translation by Aloys Skoumal.

The use of clinical molecular and genetic tests in forensic medical opinions

Modern molecular biology and clinical genetics have the ability to diagnose many diseases, the presence or absence of which is important in various areas of forensic medical opinion. The aim of the study is to present examples of possible non-standard application of clinical molecular-genetic tests in forensic medicine. From among all the opinions prepared so far at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Katowice, three were selected two of which concerned post-autopsy conclusions relating to the cause of death, and in one case – opinion based on the files of a case related to the suspicion of a maltreated child syndrome in an infant. In all these cases, the results of the molecular and genetic tests were negative, which was taken into account by the experts when formulating the final conclusions of the opinion. The use of clinical molecular and genetic tests in forensic medicine is possible and always brings important additional information that broadens the possibilities of opinion-making and facilitates diagnosis. The areas in which this type of research may be particularly useful are: diagnostics of the basis of thromboembolic complications, modern integrated morphological and molecular diagnostics of neoplasms and diagnostics of genetic defects of connective tissue in children suspected of having abused child syndrome.
