When Poland entered the European Union in 2004, the ethnic composition of Great Britain experienced a rather sudden change. The large number of immigrants from Poland made Polish immigrants a key ethnic group in Great Britain within a few years after enlargement Poland to the European Union. The purpose of the paper is to describe the principal areas of concentration of Polish immigrants in Great Britain as well as to describe the key factors determining the distribution of Polish immigrants. The paper is based on data obtained from British population registries and survey data collected in London in 2010. Research has shown that most Polish immigrants have settled in major cities, with London being the main concentration area. The main reason for this distribution is the presence of migration networks in major cities and more job opportunities as well.

The authors attempt to diagnose the contemporary situation of demographic development in Polish cities after the fall of socialism in 1989. The paper focuses on selected issues and processes related to major urbanisation tendencies during the period of Poland’s centrally planned economy. The depopulation of cities and urban shrinkage are presented in the context of suburbanisation, some aspects of internal migration (job migration in particular) as well as international migration. Special attention was paid to rates of population change in cities, which allowed the authors to distinguish several types of rates. Moreover, a variety of factors underlying demographic changes are also discussed.

More...The article analyses sociological and anthropological legacy, recollective materials and educational activity of Ludwik Krzywicki (1859–1941). Its aim is to compare his concept of femininity and attitude to women, both inscribed in the three areas of his intellectual activity. In his sociological works which deal with gender relations, femininity appears in two forms: of an accepted proletarian, who understands the mechanism of inevitable social revolution leading automatically to gender equality, and of an aversion towards a middle–class woman, trying to influence the historical process through the emancipation movement. In his anthropological works, womanhood is described as an anarchic phenomenon coming into play in the breakthrough for primitive communities’ moments of political changes. In his recollective materials the attention of the speaking subject is drawn particularly to the women of incoherent character and intellectually dependant who exemplify caricatural version of emancipation. Finally, in Krzywicki’s educational and social activity the issue of support for the educational initiatives taken by female representatives of the emancipation movement in the Kingdom of Poland is present.

In the Library of the Catholic University of Lublin fifty seven letters and correspondence cards which Stefania Skwarczyńska sent to Czesław Zgorzelski between the years 1948–1984 are kept. They are a trace of professional contacts between scholars — documenting in an aspectual way Polish scientific life. Letters, although in a private form, concern professional matters, such as: organisation of the research institution, politics concerning employment, education of young scholars, taking part in conferences, publishing scientific works as well as their circulation. A vast part of them is dedicated to the history of establishing “Zagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich” [“The Problems of Literary Genres”].

Prof. Wojciech Krzysztof Świątkiewicz is, above all, a sociologist of culture and a sociologist of religion. In his theoretical considerations and empirical research, he also took up important issues within the framework of the sociology of morality. In these considerations, we will discuss the following issues in this field: the sociology of the Decalogue, the sociology of pro-social attitudes of young people and adults, and the sociology of morality in marriage and family life. In Poland, many sociologists of religion in their empirical research take morality as an important dimension (dimension) of religiosity. One of them is also Professor Świątkiewicz, who combines both sociological perspectives in his empirical research.

In her article, Anna Antoszewska discusses the phenomenon of the interpersonal encounter in the philosophical thought of professor Antoni Kępiński, the author of Psychopatie, among other books. She lays special emphasis on the sources of his philosophical insights. While there is no doubt as to the originality of these insights, getting acquainted with numerous interpretations of Kępiński’s philosophical thought makes a researcher aware of the difficulty of unambiguously identifying the position of this outstanding psychiatrist and founder of axiological psychiatry. Polish scholars interested in Kępiński’s views remain sensitive to the contradictions among the concepts he uses in his philosophical ref lections.

The article deals with the nature of ecumenical relations between Catholics and Protestants. In order to grasp their specificity, they are compared with everyday relations which are not focused on building religious unity between these Christians. This analysis served to reconstruct the model of ecumenism presented on the websites of Catholic weeklies. Additionally, a reflection has been undertaken on the possibility of supporting the ecumenical movement by these services. The analysis is conducted in the sociological perspective on the basis of empirical studies of the content of the Internet services of the Catholic weekly magazines “Gość Niedzielny” and “Niedziela”. Content analysis was applied as a research method, and the texts dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation were studied. This selection of empirical material resulted from the fact that ecumenical themes are rarely taken up in the Catholic press, and the jubilee caused greater interest in them. The sources used were also found research on interfaith relations. The analysis shows that relations between Catholics and Protestants are close and characterised by openness, but they are also marked by distance and remembrance of a difficult history. Moreover, the model of ecumenism promoted by the websites is superficial and concentrates, among other things, on its practical aspect at the expense of its spiritual and theological dimension. The websites of Catholic weekly newspapers, on the other hand, face a hitherto untapped opportunity to support the ecumenical movement.

The attempted auto-ethnography reaches back to the oldest patterns embedded inanthropological field research. The paper concerns locality as an environmental specificity,a foundation of culture and, at the same time, a force shaping the researcher and her/his work. I understand autoethnography as a report not so much on personal „matters”as on the conditions and situations that are their background. My auto-ethnographyis eventually a description of culture sketched from the point of view of a humanistembedded geobiographically - familially and emotionally - in a region whose specificvalues were shaped under the overwhelming influence of an economy based on heavyindustry.
