Author(s): Agnieszka Skowronek-Grądziel / Language(s): English / Issue: 31/2011

Keywords: ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION; EXPENDITURES ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION; LOWER SILESIA

The main aim of the study was to identify the trends concerning expenditures on environmental protection in rural areas of Lower Silesia in the years 2000–2008. The general level, rate of growth, participation in GDP as well as the structure of finances annually invested in the protection of rural environment were analysed. A ranking of voivodships with regard to the fulfilment of environmental protection and water management investments in rural areas calculated per one inhabitant was prepared. Structures of expenditures in various voivodships were compared. An attempt was made to identify the direction and scope of changes in the structure of expenditures in the analysed period. The results were used to define the position of Lower Silesia among all regions of Poland.

Związki Wojciecha Łukaszewskiego ze Śląskiem

Author(s): Marcin T. Łukaszewski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 11/2016

Keywords: Cieszyn; Częstochowa; Filharmonia Częstochowska; Freski wrocławskie; Zygmunt Hassa; Katowice; kompozytorzy śląscy; Wojciech Łukaszewski; muzyka polska; Opole; Śląsk; Wrocław;

Wojciech Łukaszewski (1936–1978), composer, teacher, music critic and music activist maintained varied relations with the whole region of Silesia. The study do not take into account Czestochowa. Even though it lies on the outskirts of Silesia, in terms of culture the town has its own traditions and customs. Łukaszewski’s contacts with the Upper and Lower Silesia were mainly professional in nature. As a music school headmaster, he was supposed to visit the provincial administration institutions in Katowice. He maintained artistic contacts with the capital city of the Lower Silesia. His works were presented several times at the Wroclaw Festival of Polish Contemporary Music. He participated also in competitions for composers in Wroclaw. He dedicated one of his works, Freski wrocławskie [Wroclaw Frescoes] to the city of Wroclaw. He maintained relations with the Silesian artists performing his works (the conductor Piotr Warzecha, the singer Anna Porwik-Pniok). Moreover, the Czestochowa music school kept contacts also with the Bohumín art school in Cieszyn Silesia region. Despite a fairly extensive scientific literature about Łukaszewski. the studies have not so far treated his relations with Silesia as a separate research topic.

SOCIAL FACTORS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT (ON THE EXAMPLE OF LOWER SILESIA)

Author(s): Barbara Szczepańska / Language(s): English / Issue: 24/2017

Keywords: agricultural development;lower silesia;individual farm;

The scientific objective of the research conducted on Lower Silesia in 2013 was to identify social factors that influence the implementation process of agricultural development in agricultural holdings. The processes of land concentration proceed very slowly and the agricultural structure is dominated by small farms with low economic viability where income from farming is not sufficient to maintain the family, and surely does not provide any possibilities for development of such farms. To increase the productivity and efficiency of agriculture, it is necessary and essential to speed up the absorption of progress in agricultural holdings of 5 to 50 ha in area.

Cluster as place of efficient diffusion of knowledge. Experiences of Lower Silesia

Author(s): Małgorzata Wachowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2018

Keywords: knowledge flows; clusters; patent cooperation; patent citations; Poland;

Due to the fact that clusters should implement the idea of an open innovation model, the paper focuses on the role of Lower Silesian clusters in promoting knowledge flow between enterprises and other network participants, which are measured by the numbers of joint inventions and patent citations. On the basis of the analysis of national and international patent applications, it has been found that few inventions of enterprises are created in cooperation with other cluster members as well as that enterprises refer to the knowledge of other cluster members in their patent descriptions to a limited extent, which in general does not support the thesis that cluster membership contributes to the intensification of knowledge-diffusion processes.

The majority of participants were aged 60–79 years. The authors indicated the preferred forms of tourist recreation, and characterized the main motivations, stressing the influence of the professional suggestion of the doctors, ways of traveling, length of the journey itself, and major goals. Attention was drawn to the economic situation of seniors and their personal judgment about the influence of the recreational activity on their health conditions.

The Danish War in Lower Saxony and Mansfeld’s Invasion to Silesia 1625–1629

The Danish War in Lower Saxony and Mansfeld’s Invasion to Silesia 1625–1629

The Danish War in Lower Saxony and Mansfeld’s Invasion to Silesia 1625–1629

Author(s): Radek Fukala / Language(s): English / Issue: 04/2019

Keywords: The Danish War; Lower Saxony; Silesia; The Hague aliance; The Peace of Lübeck; Christian IV King of Denmark and Norway; Jean Tserclaes count of Tilly; Albert of Wallenstein; Ernest count of Mansfeld;

In May 1625, King Christian IV launched operations against the army of the Catholic League in Lower Saxony. The allies, however, failed to provide him the desired financial support, and the main Danish forces were defeated by the Catholic general Jean Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, in the battle at Lutter am Barenberg on 27 August 1626. The situation on another front of the Danish War was not any better. In the battle at the strategically important Dessau Bridge on 25 April 1616, Peter Ernest of Mansfeld and his corps took a heavy trimming from the imperial commander Albert of Wallenstein. Subsequently, Mansfeld tactically withdrew to the Brandenburg territory from where he continued in a diversionary campaign to Silesia and Moravia. By autumn 1627, the Danish troops were forced from northern Germany. In addition, the Wallenstein troops occupied Jutland. The remaining Danish regiments withdrew to the islands, and by the Treaty of Lübeck signed on 22 May 1629, Denmark officially terminated its participation in the war.

Municipalities and the Search for the Local Past. Fragmented Memory of the Red Army in Upper Silesia

Author(s): Ewa Ochman / Language(s): English / Issue: 03/2009

Keywords: Politics of commemoration; war memory; urban history; civic identity; Upper Silesia; Poland;

In administratively decentralized Poland it is the self-governing and revived municipality that is in charge of historical memory. While urban centers need to respond to a historical heritage that impacts their socioeconomic future, local authorities emerge as active constructors of commemorative practices. To connect with their electorate and define the relationship between the municipality and its citizens, not only in terms of citizens’ rights, but also with reference to their responsibilities, they need to draw on a communal past to legitimize their activities and to forge a shared local identity that would promote communal solidarity. Moreover, municipal authorities, while operating in distinct urban landscapes and responding to specific challenges and needs, conduct divergent politics of memory. It is this fragmentation and diversification of commemorative practices at local level that has the most potential to challenge a nationalizing version of historical past propagated by the state.

The “Największa chwała” typescript from the collections of the Theological Library of the University of Silesia versus the “Wigilia w kacecie” novella by Fr. Hubert Lach

Maszynopis „Największa chwała” ze zbiorów Biblioteki Teologicznej Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, a nowela „Wigilia w kacecie” ks. Huberta Lacha

Author(s): Lucyna Sadzikowska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 114/2020

Keywords: Fr. Hubert Lach; camp literature; letter; short story; lager; concentration camp

The aim of the article is to present the typescript of the novella entitled “Największa chwała” along its released version, published under the title “Wigilia w kacecie”. Its author, Fr. Hubert Lach, was a former inmate of the Auschwitz and Mauthausen concentration camps. The author of the study came upon the typescript and the other documents of Fr. Hubert Lach discussed in the text entirely by coincidence while searching the Theological Library of the University of Silesia in 2018. The novella, modifi ed and condensed, was published in the 2010 collection “Camp novellas”. Taking into account the historical context, the author of the article analysed and interpreted the text of the novella, arguing that Fr. Hubert Lach founded the narrative of his numerous works on the letter as a genre of applied literature. The article presents the biographical note of Fr. Hubert Lach and his accomplishments as a writer without providing a critical scientifi c appraisal of his literature. The focus was placed particularly on the meaning of suffering and the mechanisms of defence against total enslavement as important themes explored in the novella.

“The Living Dead” in Modern Era Parish Records in Silesia and Moravia

Author(s): Daniel Wojtucki / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2020

Keywords: wampiry; wiedźmy; magia pośmiertna; Poltergeist; Gespenst; Morawy; Śląsk; rejestr parafialny; Vampires; Witschcraft; Magia Posthuma; Moravia; Silesia; parish register

Parish records are an interesting source material for researching the issue of beliefs in returning dead. Parish records of deaths rarely relate the funerals of people other than the God-fearing citizens who rested in the parish necropolis or those killed in tragic circumstances, usually as a result of an accident. From the end of the 16th century, the areas of the Silesian-Moravian borderland, or northern Moravia itself, were the scene of fierce struggles against the dead rising from their graves. Later, mainly eighteenth-century publications began to use the term defining these phenomena as magia posthuma. The intensity of beliefs in posthumous magic peaked in late 17th and early 18th centuries. It was widely thought at the time that a deceased person whose body does not show normal, post-mortem changes (rigidity) was a witch or a sorcerer. In Silesia and Moravia effective forms of dealing with harmful deceased people were developed in the period of 16th-18th centuries. Based on the analysis of existing source material, we know that the most frequent course of action was to find the grave of the “undead”in the cemetery, exhume the corpse and destroy it. All these measures against corpses who rose from their graves had to leave a trace in the parish books. In the discussed area, the oldest entries from records of death concerning the beliefs in dead who returned to plague the living can be found in the volume for the Silesian city of Strzegom (German: Striegau) covering the years 1589–1715. Some interesting research material is also provided by entries made in the records of death in the small town of Ryžoviště(German: Braunseifen) for the years 1583–1640 and 1640–1717. One of the last entries in the death records was made on 1 March 1755, when the Empress Maria Theresa issued a decree forbidding the persecution of people accused of witchcraft, treasure hunts with the aid of magic and also the exhumation or burning of the bodies of people accused of posthumous magic.

Zodiacus vitae, an influential philosophical poem by Marcello Palingenio Stellato, enjoyed popularity in Early Modern Europe, as evidenced by over sixty foreign editions, several translations and a 16th-century Polish-language paraphrase. Despite the latter being a testimony to Palingenius’ work being read by the most prominent Renaissance humanists in Poland, the poem’s readership in Old Polish literature has remained largely unknown. The goal of this article is, therefore, to outline a new map of its readership in Early Modern Poland, Pomerania and Silesia, citing its presence in book inventories, public libraries, book collections and monastery libraries. Zodiacus circulated for instance in the 16th and 17th centuries among booksellers and bookstore owners in the most important printing centre in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth − Lviv (Piotr of Poznań, Baltazar Hybner) and Cracow (Helena Unglerowa, Franciszek Jakub Mercenich). It was no less popular in the private book collections of the townspeople, physicians, noblemen and aristocracy. Among the owners of the poem can be found for example: famous scholar and professor Jan Brożek, historian at the court of King Stephen Báthory – Giovanni Michele Bruto, poet Jan Gawiński, reformer of education and the mayor of Toruń − Henryk Stroband. Some light on the problem of the Zodiacus’ popularity is also shed by an analysis of copious amounts of marginal notes in over seventy extant copies of Palingenius’ work preserved in Polish libraries.

New Finds Offering Insights into the Knight’s Manor in Chechło, Upper Silesia

Author(s): Radosław Zdaniewicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 37/2022

Keywords: Upper Silesia; Chechło; motte-and-bailey castle; Late Middles Ages; modern era

The archaeological research conducted in 1970 confirmed that there are remains of a late medieval motte-and-bailey castle in Chechło. At that time, the structure was almost completely destroyed by farmstead construction, with only one small section of an earth wall preserved. During the conservator’s intervention in 1998, hundreds of unprocessed artefacts were discovered in the collection of the Provincial Office of Monument Preservation in Katowice, again drawing attention to this interesting site. Due to the expansion of the farmstead, the cultural stratification of the motte-and-bailey castle was damaged. Today, degradation and destruction by the contemporary infrastructure make it impossible to conduct further verification research, which would allow to better explore the remains of the site. Based on written sources and analysis of the finds, we can draw some new conclusions concerning its operation. There is no doubt that the manor already existed in the fourteenth century and that it was also used in the following centuries. It is difficult to say anything about the appearance of the manor at the time. It was most probably surrounded by an earth wall, small remains of which have been preserved until today. The discovered ceramic shards and fragments of stove tiles indicate that the residence was still used in the modern era, meaning the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, by representatives of the local gentry.
