Literary Studies, History and Popular Culture – the Spaces of Convergence. Introduction

Literary Studies, History and Popular Culture – the Spaces of Convergence. Introduction

Literary Studies, History and Popular Culture – the Spaces of Convergence. Introduction

Author(s): Natalia Lemann / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Literary studies;historio-graphia;popculture;(post)modern historical novels;alternate histories;historical fantasy;new forms of communication

The aim of the article is to juxtapose literary studies, literature and history as neighboring branches of humanistic knowledge. The author compares the methodologies of history and literary studies in the field of narrativity, and, in accordance with Hayden White, comprehends history as a type of fiction, historio-graphia, and literary artifact. In this optics historiography and literary studies are diagnosed as forming a sisterhood relationship. When the opportunity arises it is shown that the idea of postmodern history is no novelty, since up until the decline of the XVIIIth century history and literary studies have not been opposite at all. Actually, the way of thinking about history as an (literary) art has a splendid tradition rooted in antiquity. In the scope of Braudel`s history of the “longue durée” it is the model of history as a (hard) science separated from literary studies as an art and ideographical science that constitutes a methodological aberration. Comparative analysis leads to the conclusion, that both these “scientific” branches developed almost imultaneously (cf. feminism, gender, postcolonialism, posthumanism, animal studies). Moreover literary genres, such as the (post)modern historical novels, alternate histories or historical fantasy, opened the space of convergence between history and the literary, because of mutual fluctuation and the “parasiting” of ideas, topics and poetics. The participation of popular culture makes the history and literary studies more transgressive, widely open for contemporary forms of communication and more hearable. In this scope, the author presents historical game books, facebook`s historical events, transmedia historical stories.

Publisher's Rights in the Digital Environment

Publisher's Rights in the Digital Environment

Права издавача у дигиталном окружењу

Author(s): Svjetlana Ivanović / Language(s): Serbian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Copyright;Related rights;Publisher's right;Fair compensation;Internet;

The idea of copyright protection arose from the practical need to protect the first publishers of printed editions of copyrighted works from unfair competition. On the basis of the protection of publishers' interests, author's right was created, and publishers protected their interests primarily through contractual provisions. However, the wheel of history has once again brought publishers to the forefront, this time recognizing their protection in the form of related rights, i.e. rights related to copyright. The paper analyzes the forms of related rights protection enjoyed by publishers. These are several special forms of protection that exist in domestic and comparative law, and are subsumed under the rights of publishers. Special attention is paid to the position of publishers in the digital environment, i.e. on the Internet, especially taking into account the provisions of the recently adopted Directive on Copyright and Related Rights in the Digital Single Market, which provides a special form of related right for publishers of press publications.

Apostolorum Gloriosissimus Princeps

Author(s): Gerd Mathias Micheluzzi / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Shadow; Saint Peter; San Piero a Grado; Assisi; Deodato Orlandi; Cimabue; Iconography; Golden Legend; Federico Visconti; Pseudo-Clementine Writings

Owing to the fame of Masaccio’s depiction of the “St. Peter Healing the Sick with his Shadow” in the Florentine Brancacci chapel, its forerunners in San Piero a Grado and Assisi were barely considered for their own sake. Consequently, important implications have been overlooked. By focusing on iconographical details and the respective local contexts, the current study proposes that both the San Piero and the Assisi examples are dependent on apocryphal writings, mediated via the Golden Legend. Furthermore, the results suggest a locally specific double function, a dualism which consists in the fact that each not only to propagates the Petrine primacy, but is also intended to attract pilgrims in San Piero, or to serve as a church- and order political statement in Assisi.

Notes for an autoethnography of grief: fear and doubts in field work in Totonacapan, Mexico

Notas para una autoetnografía del duelo. Del miedo y de las dudas en el trabajo de campo en Totonacapan, México

Author(s): Krystyna Barbara Paradowska / Language(s): Spanish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: interculturality; biocultural approach; Totonacapan; research ethics; decoloniality

This paper addresses the role that fear and doubts played in the author’s fieldwork during her doctoral research in southeast Mexico. The research – entitled “Dialogue of Knowledge for the Theoretical Rethinking of Ecological Restoration with a Biocultural Approach” and conducted under the auspices of The Center for Tropical Research at the Universidad Veracruzana – contains numerous authoethnographic elements and is dedicated to the conservation of the natural and biocultural heritage of the tropics in southeast Mexico. The research focused on the search for new perspectives and opportunities in the restoration of the biocultural landscape in the Totonacapan region of the state of Veracruz through the inclusion of the worldviews, knowledge, and traditional management practices of its indigenous inhabitants. The current paper aims to deepen the discussion and generalize on the subject through theories and methodologies that take into consideration personal experiences, as well as critical academic viewpoints situated at the outer limits of the Social sciences, humanities, and ecology, and which distance themselves from academic positions that are more colonial and extractivist in nature. The ongoing body of research is intended to convey a sense of both grief (e.g., over the loss of intellectual comfort when conducting research), and of hope for those who continue to address ecological challenges from an academic perspective, even when such work exposes oneself to new hazards and vulnerabilities.

Uticaj prava intelektualnog vlasništva na nacionalne sisteme nauka

Author(s): Joseph Straus / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: University-Industry-Government Relations; Intellectual Property Rights and National Science Systems;

Who really is a data scientist? Analysis of requirements for data centred roles job market and their future

Author(s): Piotr Kałużny,Klaudia Karpińska,Łukasz Krawiec / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: data scientist;data engineer;data analyst;job offers;job postings;big data;data analysis;job market;data mining;natural language processing;text mining;education;

Data analysis and processing skills are currently required by a multitude of job offers and cover a wide variety of applications. Although mostly shaped by the development of new technologies, programming languages and libraries, they are a necessity in the world of digital economy and entrepreneurship. A multitude of reports by large consulting companies such as Deloitte predict a sharp increase in demand for data science and AI roles in the future of not only the IT sector, but also the entire economy. The following questions arise: “What skillset do these innovators that use artificial intelligence and advanced analytical skills have?” and “What skills and requirements truly make a data scientist and are they are any different to that of data analysts, data engineers or software developers and programmers?”, moreover, “What is the demand for these specialists and are the university programs educating future specialists in this field or are the skills too new and need to be taught solely by business practice?” . To answer these questions, this article applies Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques of machine learning to characterize and extract from the offers key skills important for data centred roles. The research was carried out on a preprocessed sample of 72 thous and job offers from the IT sector posted in 2019. A SVMlinear classifier was applied to extract the most distinguishing technical skills and characterize the possibility of the automated classification of job postings, which resulted in about 85% precision and recall values for classifying data analyst, data scientist and data engineer roles and about 90% for classifying python developer roles.

Architects from the periphery: Ján Nepomuk Bobula and Blažej Félix Bulla

Author(s): Anna Kobylińska / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Slovak architecture; localness; Blažej Félix Bulla; Ján Nepomuk Bobula; Turčiansky Svätý Martin

Using the example of the different professional paths of two architects, Blažej Félix Bulla and Ján Nepomuk Bobula (both of whom designed buildings intended to house the new institutions, crucial for Slovak national life and located in the provincial town of Turčiansky Svätý Martin), the article shows how the architects' work became a space for the manifestation of new values introduced into the public space and for the self-presentation and representation of the new social elites. Particular attention was paid here to the role of architectural investments confirming a real increase in the rank of a given place, appearing in semi-public and semi-private space, i.e. in a kind of internal space, partly hidden and at the same time open to subversive manifestations of one's own true identity (e.g. the discussed herein example of the temporary installation designed by Bulla – a wooden tower-gate added to the house of the Viliam Paulina-Tóth’s heirs for the time of the local ethnographic exhibition held in Martin in 1887). The examples of realised and unrealised architectural projects analysed in the article (also in terms of their exemplary impact on their surroundings, e.g. the case of architect Dušan Jurkovič, discussed here, who was fascinated by Bulla's designs) made it possible to trace the circumstances favouring the densification of communication at the local level and to analyse the phenomenon referred to here as the densification of locality, a manifestation of which was, among other things, the emergence in the area of so-called Upper Hungary of a new urban centre with a distinctly Slovak distinction and accumulated symbolic potential.

Poets who moved the air

Author(s): Michał Burdziński / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Stanisław Witkiewicz; Dušan Samuel Jurkovič; vernacular architecture; Zakopane style; Central European modernism

The essence of this comparative study is to look closer, and simultaneously, at the intellectual profiles and creative practices of two outstanding representatives of vernacular architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Polish and Czech-Slovak milieux, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in Central Europe. The aesthetic being of Stanisław Witkiewicz and Dušan Samuel Jurkovič–in a way, men as institutions of their times–eventually gained the rank of all-cultural phenomena and inscribed themselves with nation-forming notes in the histories of their communities. The article deals with what mechanisms governed them and what processes they themselves managed, and moreover–what effects they evoked in both cases. It turns out, among other things, that the stagnant, invariably repeated statements about the similarities of the two casuses largely miss their internal distinctions. Ultimately, it goes to the point that reveals the great or unfavorable vicissitudes of people’s lives as well as their efforts and achievements.

This article explores how liberalism, using several easily identifiable concepts (law of nature, rights of the individual, social contract), obscures the role of politics. Liberal discourse not only indicates the basis of political authority but also posits a relation-ship between the legitimate political order and the emancipation of the individual. The liberal political theory rejects the absolutisation of established power. Nevertheless, it reproduces the relations of domination and legitimises the existing order, as long as it may be presented as a product of rational and peaceful communication. Thus, liberal political theory functions as a discourse of power and domination masked by an act of voluntary submission by which subjects constitute themselves as wanting to be ruled over.

Ideas and institutions

Idee i instytucje

Author(s): Maciej Kassner / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: ideas; institutions; political science; ontology; interpretations; Nevil Johnson

The article reexamines the notion of political science proposed by Nevil Johnson. According to Johnson, ideas and institutions are the fundamental concepts of political analysis. Studying politics explores how a given community solved the problem of institutionalising political order. Thus political thinking is always normative and contextual. Nevil Johnson criticises the mainstream vision of empirical political science as a discipline concerned mainly with formulating and testing hypotheses. In his view, this vision assumes false ontology based on a mistaken belief that the domain of politics is subject to general laws. From a conservative point of view, this constitutes a case of metaphysical madness, a tendency to replace the knowledge of concrete circumstances with abstract principles. Although Johnson’s critique of mainstream political science is not without merit, the article remains sceptical about prospects for formulating a general ontology of political experience. It suggests, instead, adopting a hermeneutical approach to understanding different ontological visions.
