2023 Bosnia and Herzegovina: Wagnerization of BiH Brčko District

Author(s): Not Specified Author / Language(s): English

Keywords: 2023; BiH; Brčko District; politics; criminal law;

Milorad Dodik (SNSD) has launched a major offensive against Serbia and its leadership with the intent to try to force the Serbian leadership to leave aside all the numerous problems and challenges it is facing and completely focus on the defense of his “personality and works.” The Republika Srpska National Assembly (NSRS) adopted the Law on Modifications and Amendments to the Republika Srpska Criminal Code, which reintroduced after a period of 20 years criminalization of defamation and included defamation in the criminal legislation. The Law was poorly and unprofessionally developed. According to the adopted law the persecution is done by the office of the prosecutor you, as the other side is not an individual but the state (office of the prosecutor). Small media outlets, which are at the verge of survival, will disappear. Self-censorship by the media will occur. Provisions of the criminal legislation need to be unequivocal, as otherwise there will be confusing unpredictability in public space. The law has standards. International standards are against criminalization of defamation. BiH has no strong democratic institutions. Deterioration of defamation is a consequence of a broader trend of increase in populism in the region.

Półka literacka 2023

Author(s): Agnieszka Nęcka-Czapska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2024

Keywords: 21st century Polish literature; publishing market; bestsellers of 2023; summary

This sketch presents the most interesting / most appreciated by reviewers Polish prose and poetry books published in 2023. Its aim is a kind of summary of what happened on the Polish publishing market in the past year. The author attempts to answer questions about how bestseller lists were shaped and whether the sense of threat caused by, for example, the coronavirus pandemic or the war in Ukraine somehow influenced writers and poets by being reflected in their texts. The idea has been to find out what type of fiction was most readily published and which writers and poets enjoyed the greatest interest from reviewers. The brief analysis and interpretation of the ten prose and poetic works presented here also shows what other commentators on contemporary literary life wrote about them. The selection of books has therefore been based not so much on the author’s subjective feelings, but primarily on their reception. In addition, the aim of the sketch has been to present the publishing diversity and to draw attention to the most popular creative tendencies. Among the authors discussed are Martyna Bunda, Anna Cieplak, Darek Foks, Inga Iwasiów, Marcin Kurek, Bartłomiej Majzel, Zośka Papużanka, Marta Podgórnik, Joanna Roszak and Michał Witkowski – thus, in most cases, authors who are well known to the Polish reading public and who announced their new books in some cases after several years of silence. It is clear from the compilation that the works which were particularly appreciated by (also “professional”) readers were those in which the authors attempted to unite shattered identities, returned to a traumatic past, and tried to put the “here and now” in order. The text falls within the fields of literary studies and literary criticism.

Aleksandra Muraj (1937. - 2023.)

Author(s): Olga Orlić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 47/2024

Keywords: obituary; Aleksandra Muraj; ethnology;
