On signifi cance of the Act of 5 November 1916. A side note to an article by Dariusz Makiłła

O znaczeniu Aktu 5 listopada 1916 roku. Na marginesie artykułu Dariusza Makiłły

Author(s): Grzegorz Górski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2018

Keywords: Act of 5 November, First World War; regaining independence by Poland

Indubitably, the declaration of the Emperors of Germany and Austria of 5 November 1916 was a turning point as regards the regaining of independence by Poland during the First World War. In his article published in “Sejm Review” no. 1 in 2017 related to the matter, Dariusz Makiłła considered the legal force of this declaration. First of all, he focused on demonstrating that in accordance with the internal law of the two empires, their rulers had the right to take action, whose effect was “the creation the Kingdom of Poland”. The key term, on which D. Makiłła’s stand is founded, is zu bilden. I disagree with D. Makiłła’s opinion and refer to main directions of the German policy, as well as provisions of international law. I point to the fact that the declaration aimed at restituting the Kingdom of Poland established at the Congress of Vienna. Such was the sense of the statements contained in the declaration and their reception — despite earlier dissent — by major participants to the First World War.

SOME COMMENTS ON FR. DARIUSZ WIŚNIEWSKI’S BOOK EUROPA I ISLAM W ŚREDNIOWIECZU. KONFRONTACJA I WSPÓŁŻYCIE

KILKA UWAG NA TEMAT KSIĄŻKI O. DARIUSZA WIŚNIEWSKIEGO EUROPA I ISLAM W ŚREDNIOWIECZU. KONFRONTACJA I WSPÓŁŻYCIE

Author(s): Wojciech Mruk / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2018

Keywords: Christians; Muslims; history; confrontation; coexistence; Middle Ages;

Fr. Dariusz Wiśniewski has prepared a book on the confrontation between and coexistence of Latin Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages. As we can read in the introduction, the book is addressed not only to scholars but to a wide spectrum of non-professional readers as well. In fact, the author managed to present some aspects of the very complicated and still actual problem of cross-religion relations in a way that can meet the expectations of more demanding readers. He pointed out and explained some of the most important consequences of the development and expansion of Latin and Muslim societies in the Mediterranean region before the fall of Acre in 1291. One may criticize the author’s decision on the choice of the terminus ad quem. The collapse of the Crusader states in Outremer is not the most important turning point in the history of the relations between the Latin Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages. Thus, we can treat Fr. Dariusz Wiśniewski’s book as an interesting and inspiring, but definitely not final, voice in the important and still open discussion on this intriguing problem of medieval history.

What Kind of Artficialism Does the Concept of Epistemic Frameworks Apply To? A Polemic with Dariusz Sagan

What Kind of Artficialism Does the Concept of Epistemic Frameworks Apply To? A Polemic with Dariusz Sagan

O jakim artyficjalizmie mówi się w ramach koncepcji epistemicznych układów odniesienia? Polemika z Dariuszem Saganem

Author(s): Krzysztof J. Kilian / Language(s): English,Polish / Issue: 15/2018

Keywords: Kazimierz Jodkowski; Dariusz Sagan; methodological naturalism; supernaturalism; artificialism; epistemic framework; intelligent design theory; hard core

According to Dariusz Sagan, there are three possible epistemic frameworks: methodological naturalism, supernaturalism and artificialism. I aim to show that if we inspect the literature in Polish dealing with our contemporary understanding of science, we find that more epistemic frameworks have in fact been distinguished. Moreover, I argue that Sagan’s approach is too narrow, or premature, in that the history of science has not yet been fully examined in regard to this.According to Sagan, Jodkowski and I use the name “artificialism” in an ambiguous way: it is treated as an epistemic framework either for intelligent design theory or for science as a whole. The theory of intelligent design is a model example where artificialistic explanations are permitted, and so a maximal number of references to this theory is taken to itself be indicative of some sort of acceptance of this epistemic framework. Sagan also holds that ascribing so-called “hard cores” to epistemic frameworks, as I do, is a mistake. I, on the other hand, claim that that is not the case, as it is rather the effect of the fact — long-established in the philosophy of science — of the existence of an inseparable connection between the methodological assumptions we endorse and the metaphysical commitments we embrace.

Textual Multilingualism in Texts by German-Speaking Authors of Polish Extraction

Tekstowa wielojęzyczność w niemieckojęzycznych utworach pisarzy polskiego pochodzenia (Artur Becker, Dariusz Muszer, Matthias Nawrat)

Author(s): Renata Makarska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2019

Keywords: migrant literature; intercultural literature; multilingualism; linguistic hybridity; Artur Becker; Dariusz Muszer; Matthias Nawrat;

The essay deals with the phenomenon of so-called migrant literature in Germany and understands it as a construct whose meaning has been repeatedly questioned in recent years. The migrant-feature of literary texts is not considered to be their main attribute but rather as a discursive category which refers specifically to their reception. One of the main characteristics of the so-called migrant literature is however its linguistic hybridity (also called textual multilingualism) – the essay directs attention to this phenomenon in its analytical part, namely in the selected novels of Dariusz Muszer, Artur Becker and Matthias Nawrat. The author argues that the scale of the use of linguistic hybridity is related to the respective migrant generation i.e. authors who have emigrated to Germany as adults play more intensively with textual multilingualism (here the language is considered the protagonist in the novels – ’language virtuosity’"); whereas those who came to Germany as children use them more sparingly (the point is mainly about the ’virtuosity of narration’). The analysis is preceded by an overview of the state of research – with regard to so-called migrant literature in Germany, authors in Germany of Polish extraction, and finally language hybridity (or textual multilingualism) in inter- or transcultural literature.

The “human face” of the Upper-Silesian blue-collar workers in the interwar period

„Ludzka twarz” górnośląskich robotników w okresie międzywojennym [Rec. Dariusz Zalega: „Śląsk zbuntowany”. Wołowiec 2019]

Author(s): Maciej Fic / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 15/2020

Keywords: the history of Upper Silesia; the workers’ movement; the Spanish Civil War

The book Śląsk zbuntowany (‛The rebellious Silesia’) by Dariusz Zalega proposes a new way of writing about the workers’ movement, which is both approachable and devoid of anticommunist sentiment. The author takes the readers on a journey with blue-collar workers originating from Upper Silesia — volunteers forming the International Brigades, participating in the Spanish Civil War of the years 1936—1939 on the side of the Popular Front. Apart from the description of the fighting itself, a lot of space in the book was devoted to circumstances leading the protagonist to Spain. A brief outline of fates of those who managed to survive the clashes with General Francisco Franco’s army is also presented.

Author(s): Dariusz Adamczyk / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: Władysław Duczka; Dariusz Adamczyk; Trade history; 800-1100; Piast state;

Władysław Duczko, omawiając moją książkę Srebro i władza.
