The set contains correspondence of the chief of the Jewish division of the Information and Propaganda Bureau of the Home Army High Command, Henryk Woliński, “Wacław” with Adolf Berman. Eight letters were written by Woliński, one by Berman. The letters are kept in the Beit Lohamei Hagetaot archive. They contain plenty of information regarding the contacts between Żegota and the Jewish National Committee and the Home Army and the Government Delegate Office from January to July 1944 (one letter of February 1943). The letters also contain information regarding the personal relations between the two. Woliński’s correspondence with Berman has been supplemented by two materials. The first are reports written on the spot, sent by Adolf Berman to the presidium of the Council to Help the Jews concerning the circumstances of Berman’s blackmail of 4 January 1944. Another supplement dated 1957 is Henryk Woliński’s letter to the then director Bernard Mark. It is one of the few post-war accounts by Woliński. None of the documents have been published before.

The so called emigrantion literature is a topic, which has commanded growing interest within literary studies during the last years. In German-Polish research, we see terms shifting from “migrant literature”, towards more open formulations such as “Polish literature on the move” (Ottmar Ettes, 2001). The article focuses on this very mobility of identities. The article examines autobiographically inspired novels by Krzysztof Niewrzęda, Leszek Oświęcimski and Dariusz Muszer. They immigrated to Germany during the 1980s, which means they have been part of the last migration wave before the 1989 transitions. The article examines, with recourse to intercultural German studies and psychoanalytic insights, archetypical masculinity models in the literature by the above mentioned authors (the victim, the bad boy, the fool, the monk and the saviour).

This article is a review of three biographies of Zygmunt Bauman published between 2019 and 2021. Its aim is to juxtapose the concepts of three different perspectives on the life of Poland’s most famous sociologist, and to place them in the context of the Polish debate on his legacy. The article makes also an attempt to interpret Zygmunt Bauman in the light of the so-called „Leap into Modernity”, a concept created by Adam Leszczyński. As an attempt to interpret the reality of peripheral countries, which between 1943 and 1980 made efforts to catch up with the developed West, it becomes a framework for interpreting Zygmunt Bauman’s biography. This is due to his involvement in the creation of the structures of the Polish People’s Republic in the post-war era, which is the subject of Leszczyński’s book. This review also attempts to analyze the Polish discourse around the subject of the real-socialist past.

Over the past few years, the Polish publishing house Czarne, which specializes in reportage and non-fiction literature, has published several books about Italy. The most obvious element that unites them is undoubtedly the area of the country on which these books focus, and which we could (broadly) define as the South of the Peninsula. After years of glances shot only fleetingly by Polish tourists and artists towards “our” South, suddenly it thus becomes a source of profound socio-cultural reflections, as well as a reference point for reading current events. In this article, Alessandro Ajres discusses the reasons for this change of approach to southern Italy starting from the texts by Dariusz Czaja and moving on to Jarosław Mikołajewski and Paweł Smoleński’s (written by four hands).

Józef Kuraś “Ogień” and his troops in social imagination: An anthropological study of experiencing the past (National Science Centre grant no. 2016/21/B/HS3/02921) at the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Jagiellonian University. The aim of the project was to study important cultural phenomena associated with the story of Józef Kuraś “Ogień” and his soldiers. A thorough consideration of how the stories of partisan soldiers affect social imagination seems justified given the conflicts this topic provokes. Such conflicts are observable among residents of the Podhale and Spiš regions; in the broader context of Poland, they are an element of discussions on the so-called ‘cursed’ or “indomitable’ soldiers. Aside from the story of Józef Kuraś, the scope of our research also included the phenomena associated with contemporary perception of experiences from the Second World War and its aftermath in the studied region. The material thus interpreted included existing sources (archival material, historical studies, journalistic texts, statements found in internet media, works of art and pop culture) as well as sources created through ethnographic field research. Observations of events relevant for the topic as well as interviews and conversations were conducted primarily in towns and villages in the Podtatrze region, i.a. Waksmund, Ostrowsko, Łopuszna, “Human Lives Are Getting Cheaper…” Gronków, Ochotnica Dolna and Ochotnica Górna, Krościenko nad Dunajcem, Witów, Nowy Targ and Zakopane; as well as the Spiš region: Nowa Biała, Jurgów, Czarna Góra, Łapsze Niżne.
