Work life balance amongst the working women in public sector banks – a case study of State Bank of India

Work life balance amongst the working women in public sector banks – a case study of State Bank of India

Author(s): Rajesh K. Yadav,Nishant Dabhade / Language(s): English / Issue: 07/2013

Keywords: Work life; Job satisfaction; working women; Social relationship; Family etc.

In terms of Indian context, the concern over work-life balance is gradually becoming a common talk especially for women employees. Work life balance is a state of equilibrium in which the demand of both professional and personal life is equal. Each role having different set of demands and when such role demands overlap, multiple problems are faced. In reality life and work over-lap and interact. In designing the work life policies employer should think that the commitment of employees can make the difference between those companies which compete at the marketplace and those which cannot. A balanced life for women is one where they spread their energy and effort between key areas of importance. This research study aims to figure out the working environment of public sector banks for women employees and what is the perception of women about the initiative and policies of banks and effects of those initiatives on their lives. Chi square test is applied in this paper to check the authenticity of data given by the respondents. The research is conducted among working women in banks with special reference to SBI, Bhopal (M.P.) city head office. We suggest that Work-Life Balance is not a problem to be solved. It is an ongoing issue to be managed.

Work or personal life – a piece on modern consumer’s problems with managing the time budget

Author(s): Augustyna Burlita,Krzysztof Błoński / Language(s): English / Issue: 2 (34)/2015

Keywords: time budget; time management; consumer behaviour and stances

In the state of huge time compression that is characteristic of the modern consumer life, it is getting increasingly harder to meet all the challenges and fulfil all the tasks that we would like to or should undertake. Taking into consideration the relentlessness and inflexibility of time as well as its limited resources and simultaneously the ever increasing number of activities that occupy a space in a human time budget, the ability to manage one’s time, including especially balancing its budget, is currently gaining a special importance. For it is a significant precondition for a person’s balanced development as an employee, a member of a family or another group but also as an individual with specified needs, preferences and value system. The aim of this publication is to describe the problems of modern consumers – inhabitants of big cities, with managing the time budget, especially with regard to the possibility of maintaining a time balance between the different areas of life. The considerations were based both on the study of scientific literature, as well primary research conducted by the authors.

Pay Satisfaction and Work Meaningfulness as Factors of IT Professionals’ Turnover Intentions: an Investigation in the Romanian Context

Pay Satisfaction and Work Meaningfulness as Factors of IT Professionals’ Turnover Intentions: an Investigation in the Romanian Context

Author(s): Sebastian URIEȘI / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2016

Keywords: turnover; IT professionals; pay satisfaction; work meaningfulness.

IT employees constitute an important category of workforce, hence their retaining is of great importance. Consequently, there is a great need of understanding the factors that predispose these professionals to turnover, in order to provide companies with solutions that would diminish the turnover rates among their IT staff. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the role of certain specific factors of turnover among these professionals, and to present a research on this topic in the Romanian context. The empirical study focused on two types of factors that might influence turnover intentions in a sample of Romanian IT professionals: financial (pay satisfaction and organizational justice) and self-concept related (work meaningfulness and work role fit). The results confirm our hypothesis and reveal two parallel lines of influence on Romanian IT employees’ turnover intentions. First, they show that pay satisfaction exerts a significant influence on employees’ intentions to leave the organization. Pay satisfaction is, in its turn, affected by two facets of perceived organizational justice, namely distributive and procedural justice, and partially mediates the effect of these variables on turnover intentions. The other line of results shows that turnover intentions are also influenced by employees’ work meaningfulness, and that the latter depends on their perceived work role fit, or the match between their self-concept and the work tasks that they have to perform in their current job. Finally, meaningfulness was found to fully mediate the influence of work role fit on turnover intentions.

Keywords: work-life balance; quality of working life; job quality; shift-work working conditions

The paper addresses problems of measuring quality of working life, job quality and work-life balance and focuses on providing a comparative analysis using European data (ETUI, EWCS, EUROFOUND). Using multilevel regression analysis, we identified predictors for WLB (work-life balance) and also support for a theoretical critique of the limits and local understanding of work-life balance as a key issue in improving working conditions through policy recommendations.The paper addresses problems of measuring quality of working life, job quality andwork-life balance and focuses on providing a comparative analysis using European data (ETUI,EWCS, EUROFOUND). PROPOSALS REGARDING WORK STRATEGIES IN VISUAL ARTS ACTIVITIES II. CREATING AN INTERROGATIVE ATTITUDE

Author(s): Ana-Maria Aprotosoaie-Iftimi / Language(s): English / Issue: 15+16/2018

Keywords: guided questions; art language; creativity; frameworks for interpreting artworks

Between the age of six and eleven, children easily express themselves through drawing. After this age, there is a blockage due to the development of critical thinking. If during the 6 - 11 age stage children draw using symbol schemes, reporting what they remember and what they understood from what they saw, after the age of 10-11 (secondary phase) children want to draw what they see and thus they face challenges related to technical means and language specific for arts. In this regard, a mediation is necessary between the technical means and the artwork or reproductions of fine art (either in albums, or displayed on a screen) using guided questions. This process, that over the years of teaching proved its efficiency, contributes to the development of students’ imagination and creativity, and to the formation of a useful general culture.

Author(s): Loredana Marcela Trancă / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2018

Keywords: professional skills; transversal skills; social work students;

The present paper aims to present the results of a study that identified the critical aspects in building professional and transversal skills in the university environment for students in the field of social work. The objectives of the research are: analysis of the role of the course modules, seminar, laboratory and practice stages in the formation of skills in the university environment; identifying the participants' perception of the way in which professional and transversal skills are currently built; identifying difficulties in ensuring professional and transversal skills according to the qualification offered by the curriculum, as well as identifying measures for curriculum optimization at university level. The study was based on a qualitative methodological approach, using the focus group as a research method. The sample consisted of 166 participants, social work students from three universities in the West of Romania, and the research tool used was the moderator guide. The study's conclusions brought to the forefront the need to improve the curriculum, which should be more flexible, taking into account all the actors involved (students, teachers, employers), but mainly with regard to the beneficiaries, respectively the graduates' career interest. At the same time, curricular design of transversal and professional skills requires coherent, functional and flexible integration of all types of content: cognitive, action and attitude.

Constructing Relationships Between the Work and Private Life on the Basis of Narratives of Young Poles Experiencing Precariousness

Author(s): Magdalena Andrejczuk,Jacek Burski / Language(s): English / Issue: 1 (15)/2017

Keywords: precariat; precariousness; young workers; biographical studies;

At the centre of our interest is the construction of relationship between the work and the private life, based on empirical material from the PREWORK research project, devoted to the experiences of young Poles on the labour market. The main thesis of the paper is that within the context of the construction of relationships between the work and the private life of young Poles suffering from precarious situation, the sphere of work is dominating the sphere of private life. The private life, in turn, just as professional career, is subject to secondary precarisation. On the basis of selected empirical cases (autobiographical narrative interviews using the method developed by Fritz Schütze) we analyze the ways in which the relationships between the work and the private life are presented in biographical materials. We place main emphasis on relationships between those two spheres as part of deepening or mitigation of precariousness which is treated as a potential source of trajectory, in the sense given to the latter term by Fritz Schütze.

FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENTS AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE – THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EMPLOYEE AND EMPLOYER-DRIVEN PRACTICES

Author(s): Matija Marić,Maja Klindžić / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

Keywords: flexible work arrangements; competitiveness; work-life balance; organizational performance; financial indicators; non-financial indicators;

Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) enable flexibility in the work design of employees and, consequently, can improve work-life balance and enhance organizational performance. Based on the disparate nature of previous findings and social exchange theory, we defined the two research questions with an aim to explore the impact of FWAs on organizational performance measured by both financial and non-financial indicators, while taking into account the employer versus employee-driven perspective of FWA application. The data on 12 different FWA practices was collected in 171 large-sized Croatian organizations by a questionnaire survey using CRANET methodology. Our findings suggest that organizational performance was higher in the employee-driven group of FWA practices. On the other hand, several employer-driven practices were found to be significantly, but negatively related to organizational performance. The main contribution of the paper is revealing the importance of work-life balance arrangements in achieving success and competitive advantage.

The Influence of Work-Family Conflict on Taiwanese Expatriates' Burnout and Turnover Intention in China: Guanxi as a Moderator

Author(s): Kuo-Shu YUAN,Tung-Ju WU,Margaret FLYNN / Language(s): English / Issue: 64/2019

Keywords: burnout; China; expatriate; Guanxi; Taiwan; turnover; work-family conflict;

Guanxi has been shown to play an important role in the management of Taiwanese expatriates assigned to China. In this study, we examined the relationships between expatriates’ work-family conflict, burnout, and intent to return early and the moderate role of supervisor-subordinate Guanxi in these relationships from the perspective of job demands-resources model. We used a two-waved data from a sample of 257 Taiwanese expatriates in China, and the results supported the moderating hypotheses of supervisor-subordinate Guanxi. Besides, burnout mediated the effect of work-family conflict on intent to return early, only when Taiwanese expatriates perceived low levels of supervisor-subordinate Guanxi. Finally, Guanxi would be a buffer for expatriate assignment management in the Chinese context.

Beyond the myths about work addiction: Toward a consensus on definition and trajectories for future studies on problematic overworking

Author(s): Paweł Atroszko,Zsolt Demetrovics,Mark D. Griffiths / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2019

Keywords: workaholism; work addiction; problematic overworking; problematic work; behavioral addiction

In an unprecedented collaborative effort to integrate the existing knowledge on work addiction and delineate trajectories for future studies, several papers from work addiction researchers (including some of the most prolific experts in the field) have contributed to the debate on the misconceptions/myths about this problematic behavior. On the basis of the overview of the presented arguments, the most commonly proposed recommendations were that there should be: (a) a general definition of work addiction, (b) the need for more transdisciplinary and integrative approach to research, and (c) propositions regarding more high-quality research. These three aspects are summarized in the present paper. There is a general agreement among work addiction researchers that work addiction is a problematic behavior that merits more systematic studies, which require input and expertise from a wide range of fields due to its complex nature.

What is Wrong With The Quality of Hotel Service? The Critical Role of Work – Family Conflict and Its Negative Outcomes

What is Wrong With The Quality of Hotel Service? The Critical Role of Work – Family Conflict and Its Negative Outcomes

Author(s): Aleksandra Grobelna / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2018

Keywords: hotel employees; work-family conflict; depersonalisation; customer orientation; extra-role customer service

Hospitality jobs are characterised by long, unsocial working hours, irregular and inflexible work schedules, limited time off, shift work, etc. All these aspects, including changes in customers’ needs, create a stressful workplace, where increased demands require more time and energy from employees that “must be” devoted to work related activities instead of family life. Thus, unsurprisingly, hotel employees who try to deliver excellent service and meet high quality standards may be particularly prone to experience work-family conflict, which in turn may lead to very adverse effect for customer service and, as a result, many negative outcomes.

Organisational change, increasing managerialism and social work values in the Belgian Houses of Justice, Department of Offender Guidance

Author(s): Aline Bauwens / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2011

Keywords: Probation; Organisational change; Social work; Managerialism; Values;

This paper examines the impact of organisational change in the Belgian Houses of Justice, Department of Offender Guidance. The change that occurred in the Houses of Justice can be defined as incremental change. While Belgian probation has been managerialised in its processes and to a lesser extent its practices, it has not been subjected to the same shift in its purposes. However, one question currently remains: can the increasing emphasis on managerialism leave the social work values and aims of the Houses of Justice in place, or not?

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES THAT DEAL WITH WORK-FAMILY CONFLICT AND ENRICHMENT: SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES THAT DEAL WITH WORK-FAMILY CONFLICT AND ENRICHMENT: SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Author(s): Tadas Vadvilavičius,Aurelija Stelmokienė / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: work-family interaction; work-family conflict; work-family enrichment; work-family balance; intervention; systematic literature review;

Work and family are the most important aspects in everyday life that interact with each other simultaneously. The interaction between work and family may cause both negative and positive outcomes that is why scientists and practitioners are seeking to understand how to control them. The purpose of this article was to review existing literature on work-family conflict and enrichment interventions. We conducted a systematic literature review to investigate the evidence-based practises that dealt with reduction of work-family conflict and increase in work-family enrichment. After the screening, 12 articles from 699 unique studies were selected for the in-depth analysis. 11 out of 12 represented interventions confirmed significant positive results about the reduction of work-family conflict or increase in work-family enrichment. It is not surprising that organizations quite often choose training/workshop as the most suitable intervention. Similarly, only one scientific article presented the intervention that used real organizational change to reduce work-family conflict. Additionally, only one intervention was oriented towards the positive side of work family interaction – increase in work-family enrichment. Finally, practical implications and future research directions are proposed in the discussion.

Social Support and Work-Family Balance of Manufacturing Companies’ Employee with Self-Efficacy as a Mediator

Social Support and Work-Family Balance of Manufacturing Companies’ Employee with Self-Efficacy as a Mediator

Author(s): Abimbola A. Akanni,Chris O. Ajila / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: Manufacturing companies; mediation; self-efficacy; social support; work-family balance;

Past studies reported that social support correlated with work-family balance. However, the role of self-efficacy in the relationship between social support and work-family balance among the manufacturing sector employees is missing. Therefore, this study examined the indirect effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between social support and work-family balance. A sample of 456 (F=26.8%; mean age=31.55) manufacturing sector employees that were selected through the stratified sampling technique responded to the Work-Family Balance Scale, Social Support Questionnaire, and Self-Efficacy Scale. Results of the correlation analysis revealed that social support from family and co-workers positively associated with work-family balance. Self-efficacy was also found to relate positively to social support and work-family balance. Mediation analysis, using Hayes Process Macro, showed that self-efficacy had an indirect effect on the relationship between social support and work-family balance among employees of food and beverage companies. Improved social support from co-workers and family can assist manufacturing sector employees to balance the demands from both domains.

Author(s): Thanh Nguyen Nghi,Thu Tran Hang,Thao Tran Dinh / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: Work Enjoyment; Task Performance; Public Service Motivation; Medical Staff; Vietnam

This study aimed to examine the impact of health workers' public service motivation during their participation in response to the Covid-19 pandemic at a time of the highest number of infections and deaths in Vietnam. This study was conducted through a cross-sectional survey using an intentional sampling technique (n=200). In addition, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to illustrate the proposed hypotheses. We found that compassion in the workplace, self-sacrifice, and attraction to policy-making impacted work enjoyment positively and significantly. In particular, there was a positive and significant relationship between work enjoyment and task performance but no evidence of the relationship between Commitment to the public interest and work enjoyment. This study further demonstrates the importance of public service motivation of health workers in pandemic response, as previous studies have found. This finding suggests that the government and policymakers in Vietnam should develop policies to promote health workers' public service motivation during their engagement in response to the health crisis.
