Corporate architecture in the European space

Corporate architecture in the European space

Author(s): Alexandra Dana Marasescu / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2014

Keywords: corporate; architecture; space; design;environment; business; strategy;

Corporatism is a doctrine originally from 19th century which was formed initially as a reaction to the competition and class conflict of capitalist society. Now the practice of corporate business has a clear focus not only on providing a successfully and solid foundation for the future but also on the building in which all of this is possible. The contemporary concept of sustainability is based on an ecological design and the main goal is to ensure that our present actions and decisions do not inhibit the opportunities of future other generations.

Selection of Facade's Alternatives of Commercial and Public Buildings Based on Multiple Criteria

Selection of Facade's Alternatives of Commercial and Public Buildings Based on Multiple Criteria

Author(s): Jonas Šaparauskas,Edmundas Kazimieras Zavadskas,Zenonas Turskis / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: Building life cycle; Alternatives; Decision making; Utility theory; Entropy weights;

An appropriate mechanism for supporting design management practices at an early stage of project is crucial in terms of adding value over scope, time and total investment strategic decisions. The clients are not only interested in value for money in relation to the investment in project development but costs associated in operation and maintenance over project life cycle as well. These criteria make possible to evaluate design solutions which can be characterized by quantitative and qualitative criteria which possibly have different weight, dimension and direction of optimization (maximisation or minimization). The purpose of this article – is to compare different designs of building or its structure and to select the best alternative using criteria of optimality. Case study is demonstrated by selecting the best facade system to cover the building. For this purpose four alternatives of building facades are under consideration. Two criteria (out of three) indicate that for the case study the most preferable facade‘s alternative is gas silicate masonry, covered by Rockwool and “Minerit” facade plates.

Small Area Estimation in the German Census 2011

Author(s): Ralf Münnich,Jan Pablo Burgard,Siegfried Gabler,Jan-Philipp Kolb / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: register-assisted census; small area estimation; design optimization; relative root mean squared error

In 2011, Germany conducted the first census after the reunification. In contrast to a classical census, a register-assisted census was implemented using population register data and an additional sample. This paper provides an overview of how the sampling design recommendations were set up in order to fulfil legal requirements and to guarantee an optimal but still flexible source of information. The aim was to develop a design that fosters an accurate estimation of the main objective of the census, the total population counts. Further, the design should also adequately support the application of small area estimation methods. Some empirical results are given to provide an assessment of selected methods. The research was conducted within the German Census Sampling and Estimation research project, financially supported by the German Federal Statistical Office.

PATHWAYS FOR POSITIVE SOCIAL IMPACTS THROUGH DESIGNING COMMUNICATION STRATEGY AND TOOLS WITHIN ELEARNING PROJECTS

Author(s): Andreea Ogrezeanu,Anca Alexandra Purcarea,Andrei Ogrezeanu / Language(s): English / Issue: 02/2017

Keywords: Social Impact; Communication Strategy; Communication Plan; Communication Tools; eLearning; Online Communication.

The abundance of eLearning projects requires an integrated design for the communication strategy for such projects. The technological changes need to be reflected within the communication strategy and communication tools used within these projects. Inappropriately designed communication strategy could be an important generator of risks for the project, dissatisfaction for the target group (clients targeted by the eLearning project), dysfunctionalities within the project’s team, resource waste, and others similar to these. Designing communication strategy and tools is contributing to the social impact of the project in which they are used. Both extremes, allocating too many or insufficient resources to communication within eLearning projects has its own pitfalls. This paper is aiming to tackle into some of the important aspects regarding the efficient design for the communication strategy and tools. Some of the questions aiming to be answered by this paper are: what should the communication strategy for an eLearning project entail? How communication strategy and tools are linked with the social impact generated by that respective project? How detailed the communication planning should be? Who should be addressed by communication within an eLearning project? Which are the tools due to be used for communicating within an eLearning project distinguished by the phase of the project? The theoretical distinctions tackled here will be illustrated by a case study, referring to a nationwide strategic eLearning project, co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Romanian Government, under the Sectorial Operational Programme Human Resource Development (SOP HRD) in Romania. The project was implemented in partnership by the following organizations: University “Politehnica” in Bucharest (partnership leader), the Technical University “Gheorghe Asachi” in Iasi (the first two technical universities from Romania accredited for research and advanced education), Pythia International (a technical and management consultancy company in Bucharest), and CSI Piedmonte (a public consortium in Torino, Italy, specialized in IT for public administration). The main outcome of the eProf project is a number of 2000 secondary education (ISCED 2-3) teachers who graduated the training program, using interactive methods of eLearning. Communication strategy, planning and other communication tools where designed and used throughout the entire duration of the project for managing the communication with the teachers targeted by the training program provided by this project.

Містобудівні аспекти формування предметно- ландшафтного середовища житлової забудови

Author(s): Mykola Zhuk,Donat Zenichev / Language(s): Ukrainian / Issue: 38/2017

Keywords: living environment; house territory; yard; zoning;

Lately the usage of freedom planning, the raising of buildings height and the increasing of the among-building areas are leading areas, beside buildings to loss of the building's prolongation quality and to loss of yard's quality. Factually, the traditional structure's unity of town's environment was the yard. It is disappearing, giving in continual among-building areas that cover all area of community (micro district). In this case, the impossibility to underline an own yard's space within around neighbourhood, the impossibility of controlling above hypertrophied locations, hardships of recognizing the own house-area are leading us to situation, when identification feeling with nearby-building area is turning down. Boring, uniform area is left without neighbourhood, turned up the local living of a building, a quarter, of a micro district to vacuum social sphere.

Compatible development solutions in the context of historical settings in Iran

Author(s): Fatemeh Mehdizadeh Saradj / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2016

Keywords: architecture; urban development; historical buildings; contextual design; historic settings

This paper elaborates some prominent development solutions in the vicinity of historic buildings. These solutions differ from country to country, considering the special situation of each country, such as the number of historic monuments, the current construction quality, peoples’ interests and the benefits of historic buildings and sites. To be able to evaluate the similar states of development strategies in Iran, a questionnaire focused on citing examples of any type of intervention through PowerPoint presentation for every group of architectural professionals was framed. The results indicated that most respondents preferred to adopt the following development solutions, in Iranian context as follows: adaptive re-use of existing listed buildings, development in the immediate vicinity of monuments while considering proper separation and articulation between them, extending monuments to increase the required spaces and also exploitation of suitable infill development. Obviously, this hierarchical order could differ from one context to another. To find out if any specific method for architectural design was preferred, interviewees were asked to rank five proposed solutions for architectural design in historic context. Respondents were mostly pro harmonic design with monuments for new constructions in the core zone of monuments, while considering a proper gap between new and old.

Review of BIM Implementation in Higher Education

Author(s): Jolanta Šadauskienė,Darius Pupeikis / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2018

Keywords: building information modelling; BIM; education; Civil Engineering;

Building Information Modelling (BIM) creates integrated design process, where information flow from one computer application to another, throughout the project lifecycle, is possible, it relies on the development and use of common information throughout the disciplines of architecture, engineering, construction, and facilities management. For this reason, a lot of study programmes involved BIM methodology into their curriculum. However all of them have different attitude or way of BIM implementation. Therefore the aim of this research work is to analyse the curricula of Higher Education Institutions related with BIM in Lithuania, to identify and analyse disciplines related with BIM and their relations in Kaunas Technology University and to identify gained BIM competencies. The analysis of the disciplines related with BIM shows that the strength of BIM development in Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture study programmes is the interdisciplinary joint semester project. Gained BIM competencies in study programmes merge the fundamental knowledge of study field and digital technology management. Those competencies are gained in undergraduate studies and it is a narrow volume of BIM process.

Infl uence of Retail Atmospherics as Nonverbal Communication on Purchase Behaviour in the Nigerian Retail Environment

Author(s): Kizito Ogedi Alakwe,Ngozi Okpara / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2017

Keywords: retail atmospherics; ambience; shopper behaviour; shopper purchase decision, retail store environment; nonverbal communication

This paper focuses on unravelling the impact of atmospherics on shopper purchase behaviour in emerging markets like Nigeria and attempts to isolate the atmospheric cue that is the most significant predictor of shopper purchase decisions. The paper seeks to establish a correlation between the design, ambient and social cues in big shopping malls and buyer purchase behaviour.A quantitative and deductive approach is adopted. Data collection is through a survey, and the principal research instrument is the questionnaire. Results reveal that retail atmospherics exert some signifi cant influence on shopper purchase behaviour. Empirical analysis indicates that retail atmospherics account for 34% of shopper purchase behaviour and that design cues are the mostsignificant predictor of shopper purchase decision followed by ambient cues. Social cues do not exert any infl uence on purchase decisions. A ‘moderation’ and ‘mediation’ analysis revealed that though design and ambient cues infl uence purchase decisions independently, the interaction effect on each other is not signifi cant. Consequently, there is a need to understand why social factors do not play a role in purchase behaviour. More importantly, there is the need to identify and understand other factors that account for the balance of 66% in shoppers’ buying behaviour. Such a study might focus on factors such as pricing, sales promotion, loyalty programmes and other psycho-social factors which may work as key infl uencers in customers purchase decisions. For practical purposes, the focus should be on the design and ambient cues in the conceptualisation, development, and management of large retail stores.

Revitalization and Sustainability of Historic Tombs with Their Neighbourhood: A case from Turkey

Revitalization and Sustainability of Historic Tombs with Their Neighbourhood: A case from Turkey

Author(s): Gülşen Dişli / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: holistic preservation; Karyağdı Sultan Tomb; revitalization; sustainability; Turkey;

Historic tombs are important buildings in our architectural legacy both in terms of their tangible and intangible values. Hence, they are among the monuments preserved by Turkish government’s related bodies, providing substantial grants for the preservation of these buildings. This study examines a 16th century historic tomb, Karyağdı Sultan Tomb, located in a congested area in Ankara, Turkey. Although the tomb is at the hearth of the city and can be reached easily, it is not much known and visited by the community because of the unplanned constructions mostly used for commercial purposes surrounding and hiding the building. The objective of this study is to investigate sustainability potentials and develop revitalization suggestions of the tomb and its neighbourhood appropriate to the environmental, cultural, and social values of the region by means of need analysis, field works, and interviews with the local community. Overall, the study findings suggest that thanks to the appropriate sustainable solutions for the development of the neighbourhood and existing built heritage with regard to community, neighbourhood, and building context, visiting capacity and recognition of the tomb and the area can be increased substantially. Hence the research formulated several holistic sustainable preservation suggestions, and recommended further studies in order to realize the potentials of sustainability evident.

The article contains a brief description of the Second Life collection and an image presentation of the event where it was launched, the 4th edition of Timișoara Fashion Week organized at the Palazzo, on October 24-25. Second Life is a collection in which the stages of fashion design were closely related to those of accessory design, pursuing unity and mutual appreciation. Second Life, which is also the title of the collection, is a mix of unconventional textures and materials. Unique accessories are obtained by compositions embedded în epoxy resin from the desire to revive, to revalue elements from nature, through this preservation process. The language of the accessory collection is supported and amplified by the clothing ensemble that carries the same basic values.

The Role of Layout in Improving Building Thermal Performance in Bangkok

The Role of Layout in Improving Building Thermal Performance in Bangkok

Author(s): Thanun Srithongchai / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Keywords: building energy; building simulation; EnergyPlus; building geometry; self-shading design;

Selecting a building layout is a fundamental task in the early stage of the architectural design process. High thermal mass buildings with well-insulated envelopes are a common solution for colder climates; however, thinner wall construction and lower mass in most tropical architecture means that a welldesigned building layout with good consideration of contextual factors is essential to enhance passive cooling and to decrease heat gain by solar radiation. Building layout factors of perimeter and wall surface area are pivotal in long-term energy utilization. This simulation-based research employs Sketchup, Openstudio, and SPSS to investigate the effect of surface solar radiation on indoor air temperature and sensible cooling energy of 17 geometries with and without a self-shading feature under the identical space volume, floor area, and climatic conditions of Bangkok. The simulation conducted in two phases (with and without an active cooling system) revealed that the lower the F/W ratio is, the lower the DBTindoor-annual and operational cost of the A/C system. The circular plan with the highest F/W ratio (0.47) has the lowest annual wall solar heat gain and DBTindoor-annual (29.43°C), and saves approximately 10% of air cooling energy demand compared to the square design (F/W=0.42). The layouts with S/W ratio less than 2.4 are less effective in lowering the DBTindoor-annual and active cooling energy demand than those with S/W greater than 2.4. It is concluded that the self-shading designs (S/W<2.4) may face challenges due to greater wall surface area and receiving more diffuse solar radiation.

The Pursuit of Low Cost and Good Quality. The Changing Judgement of Pre-Designed Family Houses in Hungary

The Pursuit of Low Cost and Good Quality. The Changing Judgement of Pre-Designed Family Houses in Hungary

Author(s): Mariann Simon / Language(s): English / Issue: 9/2021

Keywords: family house; standard-recommended-model design; politics; Hungary;

“The primordial instinct of every human being is to assure himself of a shelter” - stated Le Corbusier in 1923, as he proposed to solve the problem with mass-produced houses to avoid revolution. Although the master’s prototype was a family house, he was thinking of multifamily housing buildings on an urban scale, and the majority of modern architects professed this view. However, family houses have not disappeared to this day, while especially after World War II they seemed outdated for the newly formed socialist-state countries in Eastern Europe. This paper will summarize the seventy years history of standard family house design in Hungary. I analyze the situation from the perspective of politicians, architects, and builders who were the main participants to this process. How did the communist (later socialist) party judge the topic? How did the architects’ opinion change? Which were the arguments for standardization? How can the situation be followed through the changing name of pre-designed single-family houses: standard, recommended, model?

Research Dialogue between Materials and Products in Architecture

Research Dialogue between Materials and Products in Architecture

Author(s): Heidi Turunen / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: architecture; interdisciplinarity; materials development; materials life cycle; materials research;

The materials life cycle consists of several phases. If application areas are targeted for architecture, comprehending the demands of the end-use phase might not be clear at the research and development phase, leading to an entity appearing fragmented. The aim of this study is to help bring order to the material research or development phases. The objective is to generate a review tool, which helps to observe different areas where architecture operates, and contemplate simultaneously the aspects during the different phases of the material development. The review tool of the material life cycle consists of tracking the raw materials until the re-used raw material, resulting in eight different stages of the material life cycle. In addition, each of the eight stages of the material life cycle is possible to observe with the five different viewpoints, which are present in architecture. These eight material life cycle stages and five aspects have been formulated as a chart. The chart consists of 40 different approaches facilitating discussion between different operators during the different phases of the material development. The chart might help set goals, frame areas, and improve comprehension of the research and development processes of the materials, especially when interdisciplinarity is involved in the research process.
