Spa is an exceptional cultural hybrid, a place where modernity (with rationalization and specialization) is present to a very limited extent and where one can still sense the premodern world. The symbol of such a combination is the floral clock which unites industrial time (fixed and objective) with natural time (regulated by the rhythm of nature). Spa is at the same time the harbinger of postmodernity and “de-differentiation”.

This essay explores the problem of exophonic writing in the works of Tawada Yōko, who writes in both German and Japanese. Kowalczyk defines exophonic writing and describes the formation of grammatical, philosophical and political subjectivity in writers who work in a non-native language. These writers must construct anew their symbolic capital, which determines their position within the system of world literature. Kowalczyk concludes by examining how Yōko’s understanding of exophony influences discourses on knowledge production, including literary scholarship.

The presented article is devoted to the generational breakthrough and its role and importance in the transformation processes of re-evaluation of the colonial and totalitarian past in the Slavic literatures of the former Eastern Bloc. The author is convinced that thanks to this research attitude scholars will be able to build a new concept of the history of literature based on such determinants as: cultural memory, post-totalitarian consciousness, subcultural identity and corporeality.

Marek Lobo Wojciechowski is a Lubusz writer intereseted in heterotopia phenomenon of the Western Lands of Poland. He attempts to understand and describe the Polish-German history of the place. This article is composed of two parts. First part concerns the image of the city that is presented in Wojciechowski’s poems. It is a place marked with the traces of its previous inhabitants. The second part shows the space of “post-Yalta Occident” in microscale: a house and things being inside. My goal is to answer the question whether the vision of Gorzów in this output is the image of two superimposed cities with palimpsest nature, or a merged city with dualistic nature.

Hal Foster explores the reasons behind the crisis of critical theory. He focuses on the critique levelled against criticism and critics, such as a postmodern depreciation of truth, or the fact that demystification becomes fetishized (Bruno Latour and Jacques Rancière). He argues that these arguments lead to a vicious circle, and that criticism is essentially indispensable for the functioning of art in the contemporary world.

The author describes the process of creating Goebbels' performances and focuses on his strategies of dismantling hierarchies and working for the democratisation of the theatre work, as well as the emancipation and activation of the spectator.

The article concerns the relationships between terms, frequent in Polish literary criticism, such as “women’s literature”, “women’s press”, “women’s writing”, “literature written by women” and ”Feminist literature”. The author discusses three research books that have been published recently in which slightly different categories have been applied and which, at the same time, focus on the female element of cultural texts. In addition, the author points at multiple tendencies, frequently dissimilar and distinct, in the approach to the relationship between gender and the text. At the same time the author emphasizes a certain disposition manifested by researchers to employ the gender category to judge literary works. Hence, it seems to be quite justified to reopen the Jy women to show them in a new light. The same applies to the surrounding discussions on relevant titles — just as it is the case with publications by Joanna Krajewska, Jerzy Strzelczyk and Kamilla Łozowska-Marcinkowska.

Ryczek proposes a rhetorical interpretation of a Latin ode by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, addressed to a certain Wojciech Turski (Lyrica IV.32). The second part of the article contains a transcript, Polish translation and a discussion of the text. Ryczek examines two of Sarbiewski’s lyrical narrations, both of which focus on the poet’s flight in vast expanses – his ironic renouncement of Horatian influences, as well as his evocation of the ambivalent myth of Icarus (the triumph of sublimation or the failure of imitative creativity). Their analysis from the perspective of the rhetoric of the dream makes it possible to bring to light and to describe the mimentic and semiotic mechanism involved in the creation of a textual world.

The article deals with the correspondence of arts in the poems by Wacław Oszajca. The reading of two texts: „the two from the painting by Delacroix” and „La Cene — Salvador Dali” allows determining how the poet utilizes the painting material, and discussing the role of these references. The poet does not focus his attention merely on the pictorial creations of the masters — the paintings allow him to reveal a different dimension of human existence, i.e. a religious experience.

Nader treats selected cycles from Władysław Strzemiński’s so-called “war drawings” (1939-1944) as a particular mode of visual testimony where a liminal experience is constructed from an observer’s position. Nader reads the drawings as an “abstract” or “universal” idiom. Her interpretation is based on Strzemiński’s “empirical method” as outlined in his The Theory of Sight. She examines the autobiographical and referential value of the works discussed, exploring each cycle of drawings with reference to the artist’s experience and understanding, as well as the particular framework of wartime events that Strzemiński witnessed – deportations under the Soviet Occupation of the Eastern Borderlands, the resettlement of the Polish population of Litzmannstadt and the mass murder of Jews. Using both historical and neuroaesthetical frameworks (based on the work of Vilayanur S. Ramachandran and William Hirstein), Nader proposes to describe Strzemiński’s wartime drawings in terms of neurotestimony: a visual image that supposes not only an active process of seeing but also a process of understanding that must begin on the level of the body’s neurological phenomena.

Andrzej Wajda’s films are based on visual excess. His method consists of a loose stringing together of contrasting images, which brings to mind Sergei Eisenstein’s notion of pathos. Both Wajda and Eisenstein conceive of affects as structures that work on the viewer through form. Jagielski sheds light on the affective structures that accompany the style of Wajda’s films, which allows him to create a juncture between a new understanding of film (Eugenie Brinkema) and affective heritage (Eisenstein). At the same time he reminds us that this problem has a long tradition in film theory. Finally, Jagielski describes the genesis of Wajda’s film style and its references to trauma – the trauma of war, the trauma of history, as well as Wajda’s own private trauma.

Branach-Kallas situates the concept of trauma in the context of World War I. She discusses cultural trauma theory, illustrating its basic characteristics with examples from the cultural history of the Great War. The article also analyses the representation of individual and cultural trauma in selected British and French novels by Louisa Young, Pat Barker, Marc Dugain and Pierre Lemaitre. The central figure of the facially disfigured soldier becomes an epitome of individual and cultural trauma, inspiring a critique of the nation-state and an exploration of (post)modern identities.

Czerkies and Yongdeog explore the notion of han, which is deeply rooted in Korean culture. They discuss the universal aspect of this concept, its links with other Asian cultures, and the question of cultural scripts. Han characterizes the most important aspects of collective culture in South Korea – it appears in legends, folk theatre, religion, shamanic rites and authorized culture. This article presents the most important literary works that express han. Based on selected works of Polish and Korean literature, Czerkies and Yongdeog draw attention to similarities and differences in the expression of emotions related to han and nostalgia respectively.

The author examines the relationship between modernism and the avant-garde as a theoretical problem. He draws on the work of Russian writers who were both influential in the 1920s and at the same time very diverse – Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Andrei Platonov – to identify unique aspects of their poetics as well as the points where they overlap in the face of traumatic historical events.

The article discusses the idea of urban genres as forms of textualization of urban spaces, as proposed by Katarzyna Szalewska in her book Urbanalia – miasto i jego teksty: Humanistyczne studia miejskie (Gdańsk 2017). The proposed category of ‘urbanalia’ describes the urban genological land scape that comprises verbal and non-verbal utterances. Szalewska redefines such urban genres as passage, anecdote, spacerownik, urban legend, faits divers, picture, physiology, and tableaux, thus completing the urban studies with the literary methodology. In addition, the forms described by the author are characterized by high artistic and folkloristic qualities.

Using the method of critical and analytic autoethnography (Leon Anderson) and assumingthe duties of a humanities scholar toward the social world, the author analyzes heracademic practice. She rejects the dichotomy of objective science and engaged science,drawing attention to the form of protectionism resulting from the attitude of a sensitiveresearcher. The publication of the book was a significant moment in the process ofshaping her own research attitude and field testing social engagement, the emergenceof “legitimized courage.” The inspiration to track her academic development path wasMarcus Miessen’s concept of the critical (independent) practitioner. Analyzing her role asan academic/researcher/practitioner, the author rejects the role of an expert. Consideringit critically (after Alfred Schütz), she verifies the attitude of a critical, professional outsider.

The paper discusses the play by Zofia Nałkowska entitled Renata Słuczańska. The author analyzes and interprets the male viewpoints on two protagonists: Renata Słuczańska and Agnieszka Blizbor. In the story about an affair, the affair itself is somehow not crucial – more interesting are the men’s expectations and ideas about women (as sexual objects, as mothers or wives, as guardians of the hearth and home), which influence how they are portrayed. The play proves that not only Nałkowska’s characters are distinct but that her playwriting itself is also different from the known Polish plays from this period.

Walentyna Sobol’s article consists of two parts. The first part retrospects to the First mentions of Skovoroda in Poland – from Bohdan Lepky’s informational textbook (1928) and Dmytro Chyzhevsky’s study The Philosophy of Skovoroda (1934) – to the dramatic resonance of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian philosopher celebrated in 2022. In the second part of the article, the author focuses on translating some works of the collection Garden of Divine Songs into Polish – in the projection of selected translation theories by Umberto Eco, Eugene Nida, Ezra Pound, and Jiří Levý. The experience of translating Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose by Helena Kostyukovich has been analysed. A comparative analysis of Skovoroda’s poetic works translated by Janusz Trybusiewicz and Jerzy Litwiniuk is supported by observations about the peculiarities of the translation skills of each translator. The complexity and importance of working with ancient texts are emphasised. Among the wide variety of translation concepts, the article’s author believes that the Jiří Levý’s concept is also promising. It is characterised by the desire to give scientific status to experiments on the translation by providing them with specific methods. One proposed method is multiple translations of the same text into a certain language by different translators, and then back-translation into the original language.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a problem of applicability of postcolonial studies/postcolonial perspective to history of Polish society and wider — East Central Europe, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the first part, the main standpoints in Polish discussion are identified and the certain attempt of an application of categories of postcolonial studies are critically analyzed and discussed. Furthermore, in part two, the typology of social dominations (political, economic and cultural and variants of external subordinations) based on non-Marxian historical materialism is constructed in order in the chapter fourth to interpret the developmental trajectory of East-Central European societies. In the light of the presented interpretation, the ‘resolving ability’ of postcolonial perspective is too weak to be applied without essential modification to the history of societies living in this region of Europe, where the mosaic of different configurations of class domination shaped and evolved.
