Media vs. Madness. The Case of Massimo Tartaglia

Media vs. Madness. The Case of Massimo Tartaglia

Media a szaleństwo. Przypadek Massima Tartaglii

Author(s): Paulina Orłowska / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: madness;myth;non-existence;Italy;Tartaglia;Berlusconi;mental illness

In the chapter entitled "Media vs. Madness. The Case of Massimo Tartaglia", Paulina Orłowska analyses the press coverage of Tartaglia’s aggression towards Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister of Italy at the time the attack took place (the 13th of December 2009). In order to get a closer look at themes the journalists overlooked and to explain their broader cultural context, the author employs semiotic instruments developed by Roland Barthes in his famous Mythologies. As a result, the mythical aspect of madness, to which the media had reduced the event, is disclosed. Correspondingly, the examined articles are shown as referring to the aggressor’s madness in terms of naturalization of history resulting in the extirpation of individual identity and the abrogation of the context. Instead of just reporting the criminal act, Italian newspapers extrapolated the mental illness from Tartaglia’s biography and delimited his identity to one common denominator—madness. This allows Orłowska to explore two paradigmatic forms of media madness narrative: the criminal one and the paternalistic one, both conveying the idea that madness is accounted for in emotional rather than rational terms.

Derivational Image of Travel and Journey

Słowotwórczy obraz podróży i wędrówki

Author(s): Iwona Burkacka / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

The article descibes the derivational potency of the verbs: travel, wander, migrate as well as the noun tourist. The characteristics of their derivational nests have been confronted with the characteristics of the nests of the verbs of movement and nouns. A comparative study of the collected data has revealed derivational similarities of the discussed verbs (identical types od derivatives and derivational methods), which points to the fact that the meaning carried by the root is more important than its genesis and opens up particular derivational possibilities. A differing layout of derivatives as well as the participation of particular parts of speech and formants should be connected with stylistic characteristics and the genesis of the roots.

Linguistic equivalence of the name Sheol/sheol in Polish translations of the Bible

Ekwiwalenty językowe nazwy Szeol/szeol w polskich przekładach Biblii

Author(s): Rafał Zarębski / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Sheol; Bible; translation; equivalent

The author study different equivalents of the Hebrew word Sheol in selected old and new Polish translations of the Bible. The equivalents of this lexeme have been excerpted from different translations of the Bible, which were selected on the basis of diverse criteria. The translations are presented chronologically and old translations are opposed to the new ones. They are connected with the base of translations, i.e. the original text and/or Greek or Latin text. They can also be classified according to religious denomination and the strategy of the translation. The observation of those equivalents enables us to see not only their variety and mutual influence among translations but also the struggle of translators with a very difficult language matter. Many factors were important in that struggle: genetic and structural distances between Semitic languages and Polish, different perceptions of reality in distant cultures, the discrepancy between biblical and Slavonic realities and the influence of religious denomination. Another important factor was the state of biblical knowledge at the time — incomparably poorer in the case of the oldest Polish translations in comparison to modern ones.

Bliskość czy obcość, czyli o relacjach międzyludzkich w dobie nowych technologii

Author(s): Marlena Drapalska-Grochowicz / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Closeness; virtual bonds; new technologies;interpretation;

New technologies opened a new chapter in interpersonal relations. They can bring people closer or create distance between them. The ramifications depend on how new technologies are used. Challenges for the interpretative community posed by this situation involve questions of how to define traditional concepts: proximity, presence, and conversation. In the present article, the author reflects on closeness in the era of new technologies: Are new technologies in this context a source of contradiction, illusion, or perhaps a new form of closeness?

Trade in agricultural land in notarial practice

Obrót gruntami rolnymi w praktyce notarialnej

Author(s): Mateusz Mierkiewicz / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: agricultural land; notarial act; preemption; farmer; real estate trading

Trade in agricultural land is a significant part of the activities performed by a notary public. A notary is obliged to exercise due diligence in the preparation of notarial deeds and to ensure the protection of the interests of both parties of the notarial activity. In the case of trade in agricultural real estate, a notary must pay attention to whether a given real estate is an agricultural property within the meaning of the Agricultural Act and whether it can be acquired only by an entity with the status of an individual farmer. It must also be kept in mind whether the right of pre-emption is updated in case of sale of a given property. In addition, the notary must receive appropriate statements from the parties, attach the required documents to the act and instruct the parties as to the legal consequences of the conclusion of the contract.

Methodology of pedagogical research between “normativity” and “descriptivity”

Metodologia badań pedagogicznych między normatywnością a opisowością

Author(s): Dariusz Kubinowski / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: methodology of pedagogical research;normativity;descriptivity;methodological research;global;methodological and methodical emergences

The author tries to identify, present and explain permanent controversies concerning three key methodological categories used in the methodology of pedagogical research in Poland: “pedagogical dimension” of scientific research; scope of pedagogical research; and methodology in pedagogical research. The author describes the nature of the controversy and emphasizes his own approach to it. The main aim of the chapter is to propose the author’s own concept of understanding the methodology of pedagogical research as philosophical-empirical science that is built and being constantly rebuilt in diachronic and dialectic relationships between normative and descriptive methodologies, as an emergent reaction to radical and dynamic changes of a social reality. The author emphasizes the important role of methodological research (“research on research”) in constructing new scientific knowledge in the field of methodology of pedagogical research.

On the selection of the project of actions Alfred Schütz’s analytical proposal

O wyborze projektu działań. Propozycja badawcza Alfreda Schütza

Author(s): Piotr Wróblewski / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: social action; motives of human actions; Lebenswelt; social world

The precursor of phenomenological sociology – Alfred Schütz – undertook to analyze the problems of social action, as did the great classics of sociology. The theoretical categories that he proposed for this purpose can be seen in his book Der sinnhafte Aufbau der sozialen Welt (1932) and in the article Choosing among Projects of Action (1951, Polish edition 2008). Schütz emphasizes that it is necessary, first of all, to take into account the types of motives of human actions, secondly, to analyze the important categories of attitudes and relations towards other people related to the worlds of the contemporary people, predecessors and successors, and thirdly, the typifications of the knowledge system of the acting person. The last, fourth analytical category which he distinguishes in the research of action, includes “good” and “evil”, that is, according to Schütz’s terminology, positive and negative weight. The followers of the phenomenological approach in sociology, Peter L. Berger and T. Luckmann, developed some of Schütz’s proposals and presented a framework for the social creation of reality in the processes of externalisation, objectification and internalisation. The categories offered by these scholars will be helpful in the empirical analysis of the choice of projects of actions of the graduates of the Doctoral Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences, whose worlds have been scientifically explored in a project carried out within the framework of the scientific circle of qualitative sociology.
