The article sets out to make a brief survey of Dickens’ reception in Romania starting with the year following the publication of Grigore Vereş’ landmark study Opera lui Charles Dickens în România (1982). It discusses the critical reception, referring to book-length explorations such as Grigore Vereş’s Charles Dickens (1984), Monica Bottez’s Recurrent Images in Charles Dickens’s Work (1985), Mihai Rădulescu’s Antropologia stilistică - lumea lui Charles Dickens (1995), Maria-Ana Tupan’s A Discourse Analyst’s Dickens (1999), comparative studies, such as Alexandru Mica’s Fantasticul introspectiv şi fantastical “voalat” ca sursă de cunoaştere la N.V. Gogol, E.A. Poe şi Ch. Dickens (1993), Ilinca Zarifopol-Johnston’s To Kill a Text: The Dialogic Fiction of Hugo, Dickens and Zola (1995), Elena Morărescu’s Universul copilăriei şi imaginea copilului la Charles Dickens, Ion Creangă şi Mark Twain (2006), and a variety of chapters in books and articles. It also includes a discussion of the Dickens translations published in this period, of the works translated for the first time, namely a selection of short stories, The Life of Our Lord, Pictures from Italy, Barnaby Rudge, A Child’s History of England and of new translations of titles already translated, as well as a list of all these translations.
More...In the historical process culture develops and enriches itself thanks to the various elements of human cooperation and coexistence. In the sphere of culure the collection of names creates a specific store of both individual and collective experiencing of particular group with its various needs that change throughout the time. Analysis of the sources that was committed suggests that the naming cultural bordeline of Cieszyn reflects itself mostly in the varieties on the motivational and frequency grounps. The considered names encoupas not only spiritual and material cultural features, not only mirror the hierarchy of values as well as the fluctuations in the member’s mentality and tradition but then also mirror social atitudes as the exposure of the social, administrative, religious character of the coontrn’s situation and the awarness of the national belonging of oneself.

At the turn of the 19th century the English lived under the grip of an uncompromising code of behaviour which sanctioned every action deviating from the “correct” social standard. In her Pride and Prejudice, now regarded as a novel of manners,Jane Austen used “error” as a social oscillograph for measuring to what extent people were inclined to observe or neglect the norms of genteel behaviour. The paper tries to explore the pressure that ‘error terror’ put on the characters and their different responses to it. From this perspective, Mr. Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth is considered to be the turning point of the novel. From that moment on some characters expiate their mistakes, others do not, either because they literally cannot, or because theycontinue to err in better ways.

Self-portraiture has confronted artists with a multitude of challenges, because the painted one and the painter are the same person. Though they should perforce give a true-to-life representation of the sitter, self-portraits have always revealed the difficulties of the negotiation between the artist‟s real self and his narcissistic projection. The paper explores some cases in the history of this artistic vacillation by offering brief descriptions of some major self-portraits, such as those belonging to Albrecht Dürer, Rembradt van Rijn, Johannes Gumpp, William Hogarth or Francis Bacon. The intention was to prove that self-portraiture was considered as the perfect opportunity for painters to explore their own artistic identity.

When referring to theatre translation or surtitling it is rather difficult to say where the translation ends and where the interpreting begins or the other way round. Whereas in drama translation, the source text is clearly defined, in theatre translation, the source text is in fact the whole production and is, by consequence, ultidimensional. This article investigates the distinctive features of surtitling in terms of their constricted manifestations: limited to a strict temporal framework, tensioned by the competition with other stage elements, heavy abridgement for best effect, etc. This form of translation is used mainly at international theater festivals such as the International Shakespeare Festival in Craiova which provided the necessary corpus of translations.

Between 1938 and 1945, at least 1,100 Jews in Vienna died by suicide in the face of exclusion, deprivation, and persecution. This article examines data on suicides in Vienna put together for a symposium and commemoration ceremony, drawing from the databases of the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance. Suicides peaked after the “Anschluss” of Austria in March 1938, but also increased during the November pogrom and at times when people feared losing their housing. While research had already suggested a connection between the mass transports from Vienna between autumn 1941 and autumn 1942, the data allows for an in depth-analysis into the correlation between transports and suicides and can demonstrate this on the level of individual transports leaving Vienna. Additionally, the article looks into the average age, the types of suicides, and demographic aspects, such as differences according to gender.
