Summary/Abstract: Self-portraiture has confronted artists with a multitude of challenges, because the painted one and the painter are the same person. Though they should perforce give a true-to-life representation of the sitter, self-portraits have always revealed the difficulties of the negotiation between the artist‟s real self and his narcissistic projection. The paper explores some cases in the history of this artistic vacillation by offering brief descriptions of some major self-portraits, such as those belonging to Albrecht Dürer, Rembradt van Rijn, Johannes Gumpp, William Hogarth or Francis Bacon. The intention was to prove that self-portraiture was considered as the perfect opportunity for painters to explore their own artistic identity.
