Household Consumption in Bulgaria: Structural Characteristics, Dynamics and Factors

Household Consumption in Bulgaria: Structural Characteristics, Dynamics and Factors

Потребление на домакинствата в България: структурни особености, динамика и факторна обусловеност

Author(s): Dimitar Damyanov / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: consumption; saving; consumption structure; Engel’s law; age distribution

The monograph presents a study of the consumption behaviour of Bulgarian households for the period 2000 – 2022 using HBS data. It aims to reveal the economic characteristics of household consumption, incl. its overall and internal dynamics, the distribution of expenditures among the various groups of goods and services, as well as the influence of the main factors behind it with an emphasis on long-run developments. To achieve this the book starts with a detailed review of the existing theoretical and empirical literature and then proceeds to introduce a system of indicators to describe consumption behaviour. After that, the role of consumption in the Bulgarian economy is studied and its dynamics and structure during the period are carefully described. This analysis uses a large amount of statistical data and makes many comparisons with other EU economies. The results highlight the leading role of consumption among the demand components in the Bulgarian economy as well as its slightly faster growth compared to most other member countries, which contributes to the country’s convergence to the average EU levels. In line with the growth of income, we also see an internal restructuring of consumption towards higher value-added goods and services. The results also indicate the influence of demographic changes on consumption dynamics, with the falling share of larger households and the rising share of older households having a negative impact on the demand of some high value-added products. Considering these results, some prospects for the growth of the Bulgarian economy are outlined.

The Income of Bulgaria in the Period of Europeanization of the Bulgarian Economy

Доходът на България в периода на европеизация на българската икономика

Author(s): Diana Genkova / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: production boundaries; national economy; gross value added; national income; European integration; EU budget; Bulgarian economy

This monography examines the monetary aspect of the economic outputs at a theoretical and empirical level. In economic theory, this aspect usually is presented by the concept of income. Here, income is analyzed from the standpoint of the macroeconomic of the modern national economy. The latter still plays a key role in regulating economic processes even in the conditions of globalization and regional economic integration. This is the main thesis of the theoretical and empirical analysis, the result of which are presented in three chapters and a conclusion. Today, the income of the national economy is measured at several stages in order to cover the new forms and characteristics of economic functioning that result from globalization and the practices of regional economic integration, in particular that within the EU. According to the methodology of the System of National Accounts (the European System of Accounts), several interconnected macroeconomic indicators are calculated, which cover the stages in question. More specifically, the stage of income generation (primary income or gross value added, measured by GDP), the stage of income redistribution on a remunerative basis among the owners of primary production factors (measured by national income, NI), and the stage of income redistribution on a gratuitous basis (measured by national disposable income, NDI). The three circles of national economy’s income distribution determine different aspects of countries’ economic potential. Chapters 1 and 2 are devoted to clarify these questions in theoretical and empirical terms. In chapter 1, the emphasis is on the content of the indicators and the methods for their calculation. To explain the processes that set the background of income generation, the problem of the measurement of economy and its delineation from non-economic processes and activities of society is under discussion too. In chapter 2, the peculiarities of income generation and redistribution of the EU countries that arise from the relatively higher stage of the integration reached by the European Union nowadays, are presented. Dependencies along this line arise through the institutionalization of the EU budget. Both – the side of the revenues and that of expenditures – exercise influence on the parameters of income of the EU’s member states, and these problems are analyzed thoroughly. In chapter 3, an empirical study on the Bulgarian economy for the period 2000 – 2020 is presented, by examining the characteristics of national income commented in previous chapters. The period under discussion is very important for Bulgaria, because this is the time of preparation of the country for the EU membership and its adhesion to the European Union. During this period, our country had to adapt its political and administrative model and the regimen of its economic functioning to the EU standards. Whether that adaptation was successful – in this monography we mainly seek to answer the question of the economic effects of the restructuring processes. In addition, the empirical analysis was inclined to demonstrate how and why, at the modern stage, GDP cannot measure all the prerequisites of the socio-economic progress of the countries (societies), with highly open national economies. In the conclusion, reference is made to the field of application of economic aggregates for analytical purposes, especially, the way in which they can be used in the decision-making process and socio-economic policy-making is discussed.

Author(s): Kaloyan Dimitrov,Simeon Kolyandov,Yasen Deyanov / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: mobile technologies; higher education; intrinsic motivation; students; success

The research aims to uncover the richness of the application of modern mobile technologies in higher education to support the improvement of relationships and the effects of their use on students' intrinsic motivation and academic success. А research on the topic complements and extends empirical findings in educational field by (a) measuring used mobile technology and student motivation in learning; (b) analysing correlations in theoretical constructs “mobile technology” and “intrinsic motivation”; and (c) identifying statistically significant relationships, interactions and effects between used mobile technology in learning, motivation and academic success of undergraduate students at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE). The research framework adapts the application of Deci & Ryan's (2000) “Self-determination Theory” and Davis' (1989) “Technology Acceptance Model” by introducing the external variables “Value of Mobile Technology” and “Academic Success” into a general theoretical-empirical model. According to the results of an empirical study carried out on a sample of 200 students of the Business Faculty at UNWE, were 1) confirmed the three working hypotheses and the thesis of the study; 2) identified leading aspects in the use of mobile technology in learning; 3) identified important benefits of mobile technology in learning; 4) three sets of recommendations for research stakeholders: university and higher education faculty, relevant management of educational institutions and their students.

Software industry : Software licensing

Софтуерна индустрия : лицензиране на софтуер

Author(s): Miglena Molhova-Vladova / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: software; software licensing; software market; business organization in the software industry

With the development of the software industry, software has become an integral part of the work of organizations of all types and even more generally – of the mechanisms of functioning of societies. The monograph reviews various studies devoted to software, as studies focused on optimizing the software engineering process in order to reduce costs and maximize the profit of developers, as well as studies considering software as an intellectual product and emphasizing the importance of intellectual property protection for the economic realization of software, in order to reveal the technical, legal and economic characteristics of the software solution. The author emphasizes that despite the numerous studies devoted to software, the role of licensing is often neglected. The study aims to reveal the engineering characteristics of software and their impact on the market product, the key role of software in value chains, the specifics of software licensing transactions and various licensing strategies, since the development of new software and the market realization of software are carried out exclusively through licensing transactions. In conclusion, the author shows that software licensing is essential for the development of the software industry and the functioning of the software market.

Digital Technologies – Experience Gained, New Solutions and Future Challenges

Дигиталните технологии – натрупан опит, нови решения и бъдещи предизвикателства

Author(s): Marin Geshkov / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: E-commerce; E-business; Internet marketing; Marketing 4.0; Neuromarketing

With the invention of the Internet and the appearance of personal computers in the early 1970s, the foundations of the so-called digital revolution or Third Industrial Revolution, which in its essence represents a transition from mechanical and analog electronics to digital electronics have been set. The digital revolution marks the beginning of the Information Age. Digitization is rapidly gaining momentum, and the conversion of analog information recording into digital data entry and its storage, distribution, and add-value creation is becoming the new standard in business and economics. Innovative technologies become a catalyst for growth. Half a century later, we are no longer talking about digitalization of the economy, but about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, intelligent solutions and the transformation of society from digital to a smart, people-oriented society. This monograph tends to address this need. In a multi-method approach based on a review of the current literature, the main terms related to digital technologies in the management and economic literature have been identified, namely: digital business model, digital technologies, digital innovation, digital transformation, digital marketing, digital advertising, e-commerce and digital entrepreneurship, digital society. Through an analysis of previous literature, a common understanding and definition of these terms, as well as their potential interrelationships, are derived.
