(Prze)trwanie przeszłości w trans kulturowych przestrzeniach

Author(s): Aleksandra Boroń / Language(s): Polish

The book The (re-) existence of the past in transcultural spaces is an analysis of cultural phenomena belonging to the world of art, which, like books, music, dance or ceramic tiles, are at the same time elements that accompany us in our everyday lives as cultural representations of the memory of the past. Linking them to key concepts such as cultural heritage and cultural identity has made it possible to place them in a transcultural perspective. What cultural heritage gives people is a sense of unity and of belonging to a group; it enables them to better understand the essence of the continuity between generations and the history of their origins. It also implies a common bond. Cultural identity, on the other hand, is a sense of "being in place", of belonging and fitting in. Identifying with a culture is therefore an extremely important factor in people's well-being, giving them a sense of belonging and security. It is also a reflection on the processes of acculturation, which in today's world would no longe need to take on the character of a conflict of loyalties, because participation in culture is both a bonding element, an expression of belonging, and an opportunity to manifest one's identity. That is why it is so important to be aware of one's own cultural heritage and cultural identity (both individual and group), which can be used creatively to find one's place in environments full of cultural symbols, practices and meanings that differ from those established in us through the processes of upbringing, socialisation or acculturation. Art as a plane of human activity and creativity is understood here as a field for intergenerational dialogue, transmission of ideas, coexistence and the duration of the past. It is something of a conciliation between old and new values, which enables individuals and groups to adapt to change. Transculturality, on the other hand, is a space in which multicultural and intercultural experiences are visible, which in turn translates into intercultural education projects.

(Z)rozumieć czas wolny. Przeobrażenia, tożsamość, doświadczanie

Author(s): Dorota Mroczkowska / Language(s): Polish

The idea of the book: Understanding Leisure. Transformations, Identity, Experience is to attempt to understand leisure in its core dimensions related to change, identity, and experience. It is essential to create a comprehensive picture of leisure as a cognitive, interactive, symbolic and emotional category, rather than creating the fundamental definition and way of thinking about it. Taking inspiration from such theoretical orientations as symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, existentialism, sociology of everyday life (Berger, Luckman 1983; Kelly 1972, 1996, 2003, 2012; Kelly, Godbey 1992; Giddens 2001, 2003; de Certeau 2008, 2011; Kaufman 2013), inspiration from the psychology of experience (Csikszentmihalyi 2005), postmodernism (Rojek 1995, 2005, 2010), and also border theories (Nippert-Eng1996; Zerubavel1991), allows leisure to be thought of as a dynamic, socially and culturally variable category, located at the intersection of micro and macro social processes, and associated with the dynamics of individuals' experiences. At the same time, referring to the reflexive methodology enables us to maximize perception and understanding of leisure by using various research methods and techniques (Strauss 1993; Shaw 1997; Dupuis 1999; Freeman 2001; Giddens 2001; Fischer-Rosenthal 2005; Feighery 2006; Denzin, Lincoln 2010). The aim of the first part, Transformations, is to look at the historical and social processes of leisure. The following chapters of this part is related to essential processes that characterize and stimulate its development and transformations, such as industrialization, urbanization, mass media and technology, commercialization, globalization, and acceleration. These processes have contributed to the situation today where we are faced with several questions, problems, or challenges concerning the identity of leisure, which in turn will be discussed in the second part, entitled The identity. As the reader will notice, the aim of this section is not to revolutionize thinking about leisure. I also do not want to come down on the side of a crisis or outdated sociology of leisure. Above all, I want to refer to the key processes within the sub-discipline that, in connection with the evolution of the theory and practice of leisure, and the transformations taking place in contemporary reality, make it possible to reflect on its status. The third part of the book, Towards the Method, aims to present research assumptions based on a hermeneutical-interpretative perspective and a reflexive methodology. The fourth part entitled: Experience, is based on my longitudinal studies, and introduces the reader to the meanings, experiences and emotions of leisure performed in various situational contexts. In the subsequent chapters of the book, analyses of different types of research material are combined, and the methods and techniques used deepen the accumulated knowledge. I refer to existing data: the North American and the European surveys and time-budget studies, international comparative research, and smaller European research projects, as well as surveys and budget studies in Poland. On the other hand, I refer to my research projects, which were conducted in Poland and are based on qualitative methodologies, and explore the everyday understanding of leisure. The book is written from a local perspective, and the main points of reference are the two dominant traditions of leisure - the American and the European schools. It is worth emphasizing that the category of leisure is not universal, but is assigned to a particular cultural, geographical, and historical formation called modernity. Leisure becomes essential in a particular type of society and constitutes one of its essential aspects.

A History of the Herules

Author(s): Jan Prostko-Prostyński / Language(s): English

The book offers a critical study of Herulian history. This is the first modern monograph to present a comprehensive analysis of literary and epigraphic sources for the relatively short history of this Scandinavian people. The author eliminated the pseudo-history of the Herules and concentrating on the well-established events from the organized social life of the Herules, he reduced their share in the history of ancient and early medieval Europe, which had been uncritically expanded by some scholars in the past. Prosopography, produced for the first time, will guide the reader in the personal history of the Herules. The geographic extent of the tribe’s wanderings, invasions and campaigns (Scandinavia, Ukraine, Greece, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Bohemia, the Balkans, Italy, Asia and Africa), and their direct participation in the overthrow of the Western Roman Empire in ad 476, make their past extremely fascinating.

Akt transnarodowy prawa europejskiego

Author(s): Maciej Kruś / Language(s): Polish

The book distinguishes and describes a particular form of activity of public administration bodies, namely issuing transnational administrative acts of European law. These acts are issued by the authorities of the Member States of the European Union. They are acts of application and are issued in specific circumstances. They have direct effect in the territory of the Member States of the European Union. These acts play a crucial role in the integration of the Single Market, and the free movement of people, services and goods. The author presents difficult and complex issues in an accessible form, adducing important aspects of the issuance of administrative decisions under European law. He provides numerous examples relating to practical areas of the economy and private life. The book will be of great use in all classes on European law or the functioning of the European administration. It is addressed to students of law, administration, European law and European studies. Moreover, the book will undoubtedly be of interest to lawyers from various professions, who might make use of it to determine the nature of an authority's action in a given area of private life (obtaining a visa) or economy (e.g. approval of medicines, biocides, decisions on financial investments). This in turn impacts on the question of whether the appropriate legal protection instruments should be adopted, i.e. in the country of origin of a legal act or in the country where the activity is carried out? The book can also be recommended to participants of training in public administration.

Rewizje wizualnej mitologii Stanów Zjednoczonych

Author(s): Filip Lipiński / Language(s): Polish

The book Ameryka. Rewizje wizualnej mitologii Stanów Zjednoczonych [America. Revisions of the Visual Mythology of the United States] is a critical analysis of the formation and the subsequent revisions of what the author describes as American visual myths. These myths are embedded in the vast field of visuality, models of vision, images, art and other objects of visual culture, such as film. Ameryka was written, first of all, from the perspective of an art historian, but also an Americanist, hence it offers an interdisciplinary scholarly proposition combining reflections in the fields of art history, visual culture studies and American studies. Following an extensive theoretical introduction, all the chapters are separate but correlated with the book as a whole: there are case studies of the creation of myth-images, particularly in the 19th century, in their diverse forms and media and, more importantly, of how they were revised in art and visual culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. Throughout the book, the author draws an important distinction between the United States and America, which is understood as a symbolic-imaginary field or screen within which American mythology is formed, primarily to neutralize difference and unify the heterogenous American nation. The extensive analyses of artworks, popular images and films demonstrate the way American mythology was gradually deconstructed, especially from the mid-20th century, as a result of the awakening of political consciousness of the marginalized groups, the surge of civil rights struggle and changes within the broader social-cultural landscape of the United States. At the same time, despite these internal interventions and the subsiding economic and cultural hegemony of the USA on the global scene during recent decades, by referring to specific cases and issues of American visuality, the author claims that the basic coordinates of the myth continue to serve as a lasting frame of reference.

Athos

Wzrok Świętej Góry

Author(s): Aleksander, Wojciech Mikołajczak,Rafał Dymczyk / Language(s): Polish

The inquiries presented in this monograph cover the entirety of the religious and cultural heritage created by the Orthodox monastic communities that have existed for a thousand years on the Holy Mount Athos in Greece. The research shows the scope and the way of using the sense of sight as a creator and at the same time a receptor of material and spiritual reality, which is manifested in the local liturgy, architecture, art and literature, as well as in mysticism, prayer and the way of everyday life of monks. The scale of the involvement of the sight in the creation and interpretation of Athos reality is determined by two existential factors – on the one hand, the usability of natural creations and works of human hands, and on the other hand, the influence of things on human consciousness in the physical and metaphysical dimension of being. As a result of the visual integration of these two processes, the objects used on the Holy Mount in sacred and secular activities gain their own agency, which manifests itself in their practical and symbolic functions. Due to the fact that these functions are performed in relations with their contractors, things, thus, become props with the help of which people express and interpret their faith and knowledge, experienced emotions, as well as their own attitude towards the world and fellow human beings. Using the sight in this process takes places in several ranges of vision: (1) mystical insight, (2) perception of light, (3) perception of shapes, (4) vision of colors, (5) motion detection.

Blanchot i Pessoa na ścieżkach indyferencji (wyzwania tożsamościowe − retrospekcja indyferencji)

Author(s): Piotr Orlik / Language(s): Polish

The following monograph presents and analyzes the identity challenges in Maurice Blanchet’s Thomas the Obscure and Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet in terms of philosophical problems taken up by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Martin Heidegger, (among others), as well as in the context of the aesthetic and philosophical concept of “making the indifference present” presented by the author in several dozen other texts. The following tome is the third in the cycle In the Presence of Indifference. On the Possibility of Constituting of Post-indifferential Wholeness. The second tome – Epictetus, Stirner, Hume on Paths of Indifference (the Aspect of the Challenges of Identity – Part One) explores the identity challenges associated with the acts of “anticipation of indifference”, and the third extends the scope of research to the acts of “retrospection of indifference”.

Cierń nostalgii

Liryka światowa w wyborze i przekładzie Jerzego Danielewicza

Author(s): Jerzy Danielewicz / Language(s): Polish

Cierń nostalgii (The Thorn of Nostalgia) is a unique anthology of world lyric poetry, containing poems about love, life and death written in different epochs and countries. What they have in common is reflection on the passing of time and the meaning of existence, a sense of the irreversibility of fate and melancholy. The original works are accompanied by translations by Jerzy Danielewicz. Collecting in one book similar thematically poems of about 80 poets writing in different languages and times (from the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD and in the 13th-21st centuries) will certainly facilitate the access of poetry lovers to these not always easily accessible works, many of which deserve to be called masterpieces.

Constitutional Barriers to the Applicability of Private Law in the Public Sector. A Comparative Study with Particular Emphasis on Polish and German Law

Author(s): Rafał Szczepaniak,Katarzyna Kokocińska,Marcin Krzymuski / Language(s): English

The underlying assumption of this book is that in the special environment that is the public sector, certain features of what we call civil law manifest themselves with particular force through contrast. An analysis of the application of civil law in the public sector is somewhat akin to an intellectual journey to the source of the Amazon. If one seeks a new, fresher view on civil law institutions and the civil law method of regulation, then this possible precisely through observing how they are applied in this particular environment. Observation of the application of the institutions of civil law provenance in the public sector actually prompts one to conduct a detailed analysis, which can be described as a kind of anatomy of civil law. It involves analyzing individual civil law institutions and arrangements, discovering their nature and the fundamental elements they consist of, as well as identifying the axiological and praxeological foundations that contributed to their development. The analysis carried out in the monograph indicates multiple relationships between civil law and constitutional law. The authors hope that this monograph will contribute to clarifying the relationship between these two branches of law. In this monograph, the authors raise the question whether, in the light of the provisions of the current Constitution, there are barriers standing in the way of using private law in the public sector. The authors respond in the affirmative to the question formulated in this way. In their opinion, due to the specific nature of the State and other public entities, some of the institutions of civil law lose their raison d'être in the public sector, and the nature of others undergoes change to a lesser or greater extent. This phenomenon can be observed, for example, in the sphere of exercising subjective rights by public entities, in the sphere of their tort liability, in their legal capacity and freedom of contract, as well as in relation to such institutions of law as unjust enrichment. The legislator and the public bodies applying these laws, in particular the courts, should take this phenomenon into account. Otherwise, there may be violations of the standards of the democratic state of law, including the constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens. In conclusion, the authors consider the need for developing a sub-branch of civil law which would find its application in the public sector.

Czy ten naród ma zginąć?

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The book, originally published in 1920 in the USA, is an eyewitness account of the events that took place during the First World War in the borderlands between Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, enriched with the testimony of other eyewitnesses. The author describes his fate, the fates of his family and of his ethnic group, the population of which, as a result of the massacres, deportations and starvation, shrunk to a third of the original count. Having escaped from his hometown of Edessa (Urfa), he served as a priest in prisoner-of-war camps of the Entente countries on the territory of Turkey, describing the camps in detail. The book, of eight publishing sheets after the translation into Polish, was enhanced by the editor with critical scientific back matter, encompassing an introduction, footnotes, an afterword, bibliography and indexes, spanning a total of four sheets. The original text was enriched with photographs and maps as well.

Czytanie informacyjne. Infografiki w procesach poznawczych

Author(s): Mateusz Leszkowicz / Language(s): Polish

Contemporary media messages are becoming visually fragmented. This is noticeable in the graphic design of many textbooks, magazines, web interfaces or infographics. These media are particularly strong in exposing small portions of text and image. In this sense, they are deprived of the sequential and linear reception typical for the reception of a work of fiction or film. Thus, the question arises as to how the recipients search for starting points for reading and according to which criteria they create their own cognitive paths during the reception, e.g. of infographics. In this work, the answer to the question of whether a diverse graphic layout (design) influences teenagers' visual attention and understanding of content. For this purpose, a method of measuring eyeball movements (oculography) was used during exposure of different types of infographics. The results of this research are widely used in graphic design of printed materials and electronic texts.

Docenić szkołę

Dydaktyczna teoria i metodyczna praktyka

Author(s): Maria Kwiatkowska-Ratajczak / Language(s): Polish

The book derives from the conviction about the unfairness of common criticism aimed at education. The author implies that appreciation of school may inspire further attempts to change the process of educating for the better. What disapprobation does is conserve long-time habits rather than promote the search for novel solutions. The researcher argues that, in the course of successive reforms, we have suffered the consequences of one-sided and thus dangerous judgements. She explores trends of changes in the most recent Polish language textbooks and juxtaposes them with the comments made as far back as in the 1990s. She presents materials originating straight from practice. She compares education in Poland to that in an international school. She describes the actions inspired by a historian, an art teacher and a business studies teacher, as well as the effects of Polish lessons and the subject called the facets of contemporary culture. Many of the proposals under examination occurred in 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. The protagonists of most texts are schoolgirls and schoolboys, and their written assignments occupy the centre of attention. Not only does the methodological nitty-gritty give an insight into the educational reality, but it also facilitates decidedly more panoramic imaging and placing of the said reality against the background of historical and contemporary methodological thought. This is documented by the cited papers concerning various didactic options. The differences between them open up the sphere of freedom for school, providing teachers with the choice of concepts that appeal to them most.

Doktorat

Konteksty akademickie i społeczno-kulturowe

Author(s): Emilia Grzesiak / Language(s): Polish

This book presents issues related to doctorates and doctoral studies in various contexts. It describes their social significance, taking into account their value to society, and also explains their continuing popularity. The publication has an ordered structure consisting of seven chapters. The first and second chapters reconstruct the concept of the doctorate, starting with its history and then moving on to possible understandings and perceptions; the types of doctorate and different approaches to it are considered. The third chapter is devoted to the rituals associated with the awarding of doctorates. It focuses on matriculation, understood as an academic ritual, and the social significance of academic rituals and symbols, as well as the nature and course of the PhD thesis defence. The fourth chapter describes the role of the doctorate, which often constitutes a conscious and deliberate turning point in a career, whether academic or non-academic, or in the strictly private dimension. The fifth chapter is a synthetic analysis of the transformation processes in the modern-day university. It addresses the issue observed nowadays of the commercialisation of the knowledge acquisition process. Moreover, it presents current approaches to research and academic careers, as well as referring to the issue of diploma inflation (e.g. in terms of the theory of credentials). Chapter Six outlines selected contexts of access to doctorates. It analyses the participation of women in doctoral studies and identifies opportunities for foreign students to realise their academic ambitions. The final chapter presents the psychosocial aspects of writing a doctorate, starting with the ways of selecting candidates for doctoral studies. It addresses a variety of issues, starting with the choice of the topic of the doctoral dissertation, through doctoral seminars, the issue of tutoring and mentoring in doctoral studies, the role and importance of the supervisor in the process of writing the dissertation and conducting research (also in the context of the phenomenon of indexing and the ubiquitous fight for points), and ending with problems and difficult situations occurring during the process of writing one's dissertation, such as isolation in academic space.

Aspekty psychospołeczne

Author(s): Natalia Ulaniecka / Language(s): Polish

Cancer is becoming an ever greater problem, not only for individual health, but also for society as a whole. Statistics show that more and more people are experiencing the oncological illness. This serious, potentially fatal disease undeniably affects life and functioning, not only in the physical aspect, but also in the psychological and social, the latter being a dimension which often seems to be overlooked in discourse on this problem. In the case of oncological diseases, the treatment of which in many cases is radical and where the disease itself has particular social significance, this impact is especially significant. Thus, a large and extremely important niche appears in the area of scientific and practical interest concerning support for the quality of life and everyday functioning of those with oncological diseases. Referring to theory and the results of her own research (based on interviews with cancer patients and specialists), the author describes extremely important aspects of living with and alongside cancer. She addresses issues related to family functioning, social functioning and functioning as a patient. This book aims to familiarise readers with the specific difficulties experienced by those suffering from cancer as well as their needs related to this illness. This may be the first step towards greater understanding and support for people coping with cancer.

Dyskurs historii nauki

Author(s): Tomasz Falkowski / Language(s): Polish

The monograph can be regarded as an attempt to answer the following question: How is the history of science written? By putting French-language works produced from the eighteenth to the beginning of the twenty-first century (within such fields as historical epistemology, hermeneutics, studies of science and technology, archaeology of knowledge, history of mentality, ecology of practices, structuralism, historical anthropology, etc.), the author presents the most significant and nodal points in which the discourse on the history of scientific ideas and achievements faced numerous specific difficulties, problems, aporias or challenges. The analyses presented in the book show: how historians are confronted with the various visions that scientists themselves have had and still have of the historicity of science; that historians are faced with scientific disputes whose image was later imposed by their ‘winners’; that the same method used to describe both early and modern science appreciates scientific achievements and yet denigrates them; that historians writing about science and its history are never in a distant (neutral) position, for they are themselves part of a crucial event, the emergence of modern science; and that not every historical description of scientific phenomena corresponds to that of those who shape science.

Studium systemu edukacji i jego społeczno-kulturowych uwarunkowań

Author(s): Anna Mańkowska / Language(s): Polish

The book consists of four main chapters constituting specific thematic sections. The first section presents the cultural determinants of the education system in China. The author's interpretation shows the cultural foundations of education in the Middle Kingdom. The traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and legalism in education, the Chinese tradition of guanxi and the approach to globalization changes in the field of education were described. In the second section, the reader will find a description of the education system (macro perspective) and an explanation of how the Chinese system works and is structured in terms of organization, management, monitoring and financing of education. The next section is devoted to selected educational aspects in the era of globalization changes (mezo perspective) in the light of changes in the educational law, announced in May 2021, which officially requires education and upbringing in the "Chinese spirit", such as: moral education, testing students, using AI (artificial intelligence) in education, special education, extracurricular education or education of ethnic minorities. Filologia wobec wyzwań komunikacji specjalistycznej. d współpracy z biznesem po kształcenie nauczycieli

O

Author(s): Elżbieta Gajewska,Magdalena Sowa,Joanna Kic-Drgas / Language(s): Polish

The publication is a three-author monograph prepared in cooperation with the Pedagogical University in Kraków (KEN), Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin and Adam Mickiewicz University. The study programmes of philology studies at Polish universities are subject to constant evolution in order to adapt to the expectations of the changing labour market and boost their graduates' employability. Changes in the profile of education of philologists are sometimes very important. This publication analyses three areas in which it is particularly visible how philology studies open up possibilities for their graduates' professional careers in a company, which is understood here in broad terms: these areas are cooperation between the university and the business environment, preparing students to communicate in a foreign language in specialist contexts, and training teachers of specialist languages who can respond to the expectations of specific audiences. The study programmes of six popular philologies at 22 Polish universities were analysed, i.e. English, German, Romance languages, Hispanism, Italian and Russian studies. The authors have sought to describe the forms and methods of university education on neophilology degree courses through the prism of the main assumptions of specialist glottodidactics. Therefore, this monograph is, on the one hand, a record of the real state of affairs, which can be observed in terms of the curricula offered on neophilology degree courses in Poland. On the other, it is also an illustration of how and to what extent the theoretical and methodological assumptions of specialist glottodidactics impact on the shape of each training programme preparing for the profession. The rich research material forming the basis of this study makes it possible to discern the changes that have affected the education of philologists in Poland, and to show the place specialist language teaching has in current neophilology education. The results of the analysis indicate the directions for developing the teaching on offer, and may also act as an inspiration for potential modifications.
