The Matica Srpska Journal of Social Sciences (Zbornik Matice srpske za društvene nauke) was first published in 1950. Until the 10th volume (1955) it was published as Naučni zbornik: serija društvenih nauka (Scientific Journal: Social Sciences Series), from the 11th volume (1956) as Zbornik za društvene nauke (Journal of Social Sciences) and from the 76th volume (1984) under the same name as today.

The Matica Srpska Journal of Literature and Language, founded in 1953, is the oldest journal of Matica Srpska. The founder and the first Editor in Chief was the President of Matica Srpska at the time, Mladen Leskovac. The first volume was finished on the 1st of September 1953 and first published in 1954. Mladen Leskovac wrote the following then: “The task of the Matica Srpska Journal of Literature and Language is clear: Serbian literature and the Serbian language will be studied on the pages of this journal, that is to say, shorter monographs and treatises, articles, shorter contributions, archival material and bibliographies, as well as important papers and reviews of new works in this field will be published.”
Even though the focus of the journal is the study of the national literature it is open to literary theory and comparative research as well.
