Summary/Abstract: The position of Bosniaks in Sandžak cannot be understood without taking into account the wider context, which includes the attitude towards the Muslims of the Balkans. The fate of Muslims in the Balkans is closely related to the perception of "other" Balkan national elites about them. The history of Muslims in the Balkans after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire is characterized by persecution, open or hidden discrimination, genocide and wars. Intermittent periods of relative peace were only the prelude to new repressions and sufferings. With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the so-called the "eastern question" that became actualized again in the new international circumstances after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
