Summary/Abstract: The primary objective of the European Central Bank (ECB) is to maintain price stability. It achieves this by setting a medium-term inflation target of just below 2%. The long-term average inflation rate in the euro area since 1999 is still in line with this medium-term target. This is due to a long period of mostly higher inflation, which lasted from the introduction of the euro until the end of 2008 and then also in 2011 and 2012. The Euro area has already been in deflation, from June to October 2009.
