Summary/Abstract: The EU-Canada summit on 26 September 2014 adopted a declaration welcoming the completion of the CETA negotiations. This summit was followed by a process of so-called legal cleaning of the treaty text and subsequent preparation of translations. The ratification process itself will only follow. Everything could take around two years. In Canada, it can be assumed that the government will submit CETA to the federal parliament for ratification, probably only after this year's October elections. On the EU side, a snag in the ratification process could be the question of whether the treaty will be ratified only by the EU institutions, or by all 28 parliaments of the member states. The decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union in the currently ongoing proceedings on the method of ratification of the free trade agreement with Singapore may be significant in this regard, as it could indicate an answer in relation to the method of ratification of CETA.
