Summary/Abstract: Few doubt that the events of 2014 represented a structural change for European security, looking south or east of us. The security environment as Europeans understand it is primarily dependent on the West-East axis. Since the end of the Cold War and the integration of former Eastern European states into Euro-Atlantic structures, Europe has been without a significant threat from the East that would make it a potential “battlefield”. Russia’s violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, which is crucial for the strategic independence of Central Europe,1 and the increased activity of Russian armed forces in the Baltics and the Black Sea send a clear message – the promotion of Russian interests by all means is now also an option in the West.
