Summary/Abstract: Belarus has been ruled by the authoritarian regime of Alexander Lukashenko for almost 20 years. The opposition has little influence on the country's political course. Even though Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei was removed from the EU sanctions list, there has been no return to the qualitative level of Belarusian-EU relations from 2008-2009. The economic uncompetitiveness of the Belarusian economy determines the country's foreign orientation towards Russia, which Belarus uses for its Eurasian integration efforts. Despite its emphasis on human rights, the Czech Republic has recently been able to penetrate Belarusian markets more and strengthen trade relations with this country.
