Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to analyze the history of the modern interventions of the Turkish military into politics. The authors try to identify common circumstances which provoked military interventions in the past and find out a common scheme of the military interventions into politics in Turkey. The authors conclude that the past military interventions into politics occurred when the stability of the Turkish society was endangered. In general, the Turkish military tries to justify its interventions into politics by its desire to defend principles of Kemalism and preserve stability of the whole country. The military intends to be an institution on which secular parts of the Turkish society can rely. Nevertheless, the political influence of the Turkish military has been declining since the Turgut Özal’s presidency. This process accelerated after 2002 when AKP came to power. The capacities and capabilities of the Turkish military to intervene into politics have been significantly reduced. This recent development removed military as the only entity able to challenge the power of ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkish politics. The situation when AKP has, among other Turkish institutions, no relevant rival can endanger democracy in Turkish Republic.
