Summary/Abstract: The most important event of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will probably be the November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius. During this summit, association agreements with two former Soviet republics – Ukraine and Moldova – are expected to be signed. In practical terms, this would create a free trade area between the European Union (EU) and both countries. It would confirm the geopolitical orientation of these states, which would no longer be able to join the customs union led by Russia or the proposed Eurasian Union. Russia’s position plays an important role in the entire process leading to the signing of the association agreements, as it has already taken some practical steps towards Ukraine and Moldova to prevent their accession to the EU.
