Summary/Abstract: Malta holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2017. She took over this role from Slovakia, which coordinated the work of the EU Council, defined thematic priorities and mediated relations with other institutions of the European Union (EU) in the second half of 2016. Like Slovakia, this is the first presidency of the Council of the EU for Malta, which it assumes at a time of numerous internal and external challenges. The Maltese presidency continues the period of the so-called "troika" at the head of the EU: The Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta. The troika is made up of EU member states that define and guide the EU agenda for a period of 18 months, ensuring its smooth functioning and continuity in dealing with certain issues. The presidency of the EU Council is also an opportunity for member states to highlight topics of importance for national or regional interest.
