Summary/Abstract: The steps towards speeding up the integration of the candidate countries into the EU have been rather modest and not systemic enough. In order to bring the countries closer to the Union and build a stronger partnership with a credible perspective of their future membership, a more concrete and ambitious approach is needed. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the proposals initiated by the think-tank community as well as the current initiatives and discussions at the EU level, identify opportunities and areas where tangible progress can be achieved, and provide recommendations to policymakers on how to turn these concepts into reality in a foreseeable future.
