Summary/Abstract: Modern people receive the predominant amount of information indirectly not through personal experience and media have a huge share as a provider of information. In recent years, more and more people are turning to websites and social media to keep up with current events and news stories. The number of websites and news articles with dubious credibility is growing in direct proportion. The instantaneous nature of social networks —combined with the attention economy fuelling Facebook, incentivizes attention-grabbing misinformation. During an emergency or in a time of anxiety, online users tend to share unverified information. News and social media are full of information about the coronavirus pandemic. But not all information is objective, useful and important. Given the potential for creating fake news on the topic of coronavirus and their rapid spread on social networks (especially Facebook), this report analyzes the typical characteristics of misinformation and aims to increase media literacy of users.
