Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the recent and emerging challenges to the Common European Asylum System. The author pays special attention to the circumstances related to the wave of people seeking protection and asylum in 2015 and presents the genesis of the European asylum system dating back in the ‘70s. the article discusses institutional issues as well as vulnerabilities of the Common European Asylum System. The research concludes that although being an attempt for joint solidarity efforts, the Common European Asylum System was dominated by the national interests and, in some cases, might have led to accelerating populist trends.
