Summary/Abstract: The article is based upon the idea that collective identification with institutions beyond the nation state becomes a standard for measuring integration. Thus, we start the paper with the analysis of European integration theories, essential for the purpose of our work: Transactionalism and Neo¬functionalism, and also we investigate the concept of ‘European citizenship’, especially as a specific institution of the European construction. The second part of the paper analyses the results of a field research, conducted in the city of Craiova, and highlights the level of attachment of citizens from Craiova to the European citizenship.
