Summary/Abstract: Portugal is one of the small countries in the EU with a population of 10.4 million and a GDP of 179.4 billion euros in 2015. It is the third country in the euro area to fall into the debt spiral and receive a rescue package from the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The economic and political development of Portugal, the reasons for resorting to a formal rescue program, as well as the subsequent development contain guidelines and lessons not only for the smaller countries in the EU and the euro area. The analysis of Portugal's economic development and problems can be the basis for raising the question of the fundamental problem of the euro area, namely the integration of diverse economies. In an inhomogeneous economic space formed by countries that have adopted the single currency, it is rather common for tensions of different nature and intensity to arise.
