Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the characteristics of the leveraged buyouts (LBOs) and how private equity funds use these deals to achieve relatively higher rates of return. The study also presents recent trends in the LBO deals in the countries from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), and Bulgaria in particular, underlining their increasing role in the private equity activity in the region. The relatively low level of development of the leveraged buyout market in CEE highlights significant growth potential stemming from the ongoing process of economic convergence with Western Europe, the development of local capital and debt markets, and the growing interest of foreign strategic and financial investors in the region.
