Summary/Abstract: The article in the first, general part contains a brief description of the culture of Vienna around 1900 and bidermeier as a paradigm of urban culture of the 19th century. The second part presents an analysis of some of the leading Viennese (and, more broadly, Austrian) writers of this time: H. von Hofmannstahl, A. Schnitzler, R. Musil, R. M. Rilke and others. The essence of these analyzes is to show the places where the culture of the 19th c. became a subject of re-interpretation opening the way for new questions and ways of writing.
