Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt at presenting the usefulness of a method based on a project connected with geographical names (microtoponyms) for broadening junior high school students’ knowledge about the history of a region.Research material contains over 800 microtoponyms (with their folk etymology) collected in the area near Wręczyca Wielka next to Klobuck (Silesian Province). The first part of the article is devoted to the phases of work on the educational project (e.g. the collecting of material). The second part presents ways of microtoponyms analysis. The author describes the reconstruction of the ‘small fatherland’ history, the region’s landscape hidden in microtoponyms, a traditional village picture and the linguistic-cultural changes of the rural area. The further part presents shortly how these issues are connected with the ‘cultural identity’ of the inhabitants of the village.
