Summary/Abstract: This article endeavours to describe the semantic development of the verb ciec in Polish. In these reflections, an analysis concerning changes in meaning intermingles with an etymological analysis. The first part traces the (primarily formal) development of the proto-Slavic root *tek- in chosen Indo-European languages: Slavic (Czech, Polish, Russian), Germanic (English, German), Romance (French, Italian), and Baltic (Lithuanian) ones. This analysis has been supplemented with information concerning another proto-Slavic root that is in semantic proximity to *tek-, namely the root *pleu-. Further in the article, the semantic development of the lexeme ciec in Polish is presented. The research material includes etymological dictionaries of the mentioned Indo-European languages and Polish language dictionaries that present vocabulary from different developmentphases of the language. This article endeavours to describe the semantic development of the verb ciec in Polish.
