Summary/Abstract: The ability to read in a foreign language plays a fundamental role in education at the academic level; as reading constitutes the basis for learning from text and acquiring content knowledge; and subsequently for sharing the knowledge gained in intercultural communication. The goal of the current paper is to address some significant issues connected with defining reading; interpreting the process of text comprehension (reading models); and above all the concept of reading to learn. Special attention is paid to the intricate relations between language and knowledge and to their integration in the process of acquiring disciplinary knowledge. It is argued that enhancing the ability of reading and learning from an academic text requires that foreign language teachers provide their students with proper assistance so that they can both develop language competence and deploy reading skills supportive in single and multiple text processing as well as in knowledge construction.
