Summary/Abstract: The Sephardic newspaper of Constantinople El Amigo de la Famiya published in installments, in 1881, an adaptation of several parts of Don Quixote to Judeo-Spanish, in Hebrew letters. Probably, the author of this adaptation was David Fresco, founder and director of that newspaper. In this article we analyze the characteristics of his adaptation, the challenges that Fresco had to face in order to translate the Spanish text of the 17th century into the Sephardic language of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 19th century, and what resources he used to perform a translation between two linguistic varieties quite close to each other, as Spanish and Judeo-Spanish are.
