Summary/Abstract: The considerable influence of The Simpsons on contemporary culture induced the author to analyze the three suicide attempts of Moe Szyslak shown in the sitcom, paying special attention to the ethics of their portrayal. These deliberations demand a recognition of the fact that animated sitcoms are by their nature supposed to be mocking, while suicide is an issue which should be dealt with very carefully. The analysis has led the author to the conclusion that although some aspects of portraying Moe’s tragedy can raise doubts, the sitcom describes the situation of a person in crisis in a valuable way because it popularizes knowledge on the subject of loneliness in presuicidal crisis.
