Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, paying special attention to the suicidal motivations of the protagonists. The starting point for the deliberations is the stereotype of suicide out of love, rooted deep in the social reception of this play. However, the author proves that interpreting Romeo’s and Juliet’s reasons to commit suicide only as an expression of romantic attachment to their lover prevents us from noticing other factors that influenced the protagonists’ decision to end their lives.
