Summary/Abstract: The fundamental task of the presented essay is an indication and a discussion of a number of difficulties connected with the precise formulation of an answer to the question: what is greatness in art and how should it be understood in contemporary times? The author suggests a definition of this term and on selected examples of outstanding works and artists presents a broad range of the discussed issue. Simultaneously, he points to the complexity of the current cultural situation, which does not foster a justified glorification of currently living artists. Analytical reflections concern mainly the artistic achievement of the twentieth century.
