Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the issue of motivation, which from a teacher’s point of view belongs to the psychological field of study. Nowadays the world gives us much more possibilities than ever before. Despite this fact, the main motivational factor in Polish schools are still grades, which are the tools of extrinsic motivation. It is worth considering whether extrinsic motivation, which boils down to the reward and punishment system, is able to help learners to find energy, courage and strength to respond the different challenges and make their dreams come true. Is it working? Does it give the learners confidence and courage? Does it encourage to want more? The answers to these questions may be found in this article. There are not many studies in Poland which concern the role of motivation in schools. The article presents two analyses of research results on primary-school children motivation and on effectiveness of different ways of motivating used by teachers of primary schools. It takes into consideration the fact that in the case of primary-school children motivation is still developing.
