Summary/Abstract: The article confronts the concept of the experience developed by the British empiricists and the concept of W. James which he himself considers as radicalization of the previous one. This comparison allows to follow the emerging of Hume’s skeptical attitude and enables an interpretation of James’ concept that assumed existence of the pure experience and possibility of drawing all the other concepts from it. In fact already in the thought of Locke we can find a concept similar to James’ idea of pure experience, which was developed on the psychological basis and devoid of the metaphysical ground. However, in case of both philosophers it remains only a methodological postulate accepted due to the practical reasons.
