Summary/Abstract: This dissertation addresses the issues relating to the place and role of annotations in the printed political sermons of Stanislavian times. The analysis of the collected material allowed putting forth a thesis that annotations were not commonly used in this type of religious prose, unlike the customary supplemental statements accompanying the sermon narrative, rooted in the practices of a dialogue with a reader through titles, forewords, dedicatory letters, and print permits. Using explanatory notes depended mainly on the author’s knowledge and scholarly competence, their sensitivity to the changes in literary and reading culture, awareness of the significance of annotations for the reading, reception, and social circulation of a literary work. Annotations had different forms and served various functions. They were either concise and boiled down to giving short, explanatory information about the content or bibliography, or, they were comprehensive historical comments, enriched with reflection on history and extensive source excerpts. During the Great Sejm and Kosciuszko Uprising, there appeared polemical annotations, close to political journalistic writing.
