Summary/Abstract: The text analyses the presence of the motif of an odalisque with a parrot in 19th century art in the context of the durable topic a woman with a parrot in Western European literature. It traces the core semantic nuclei of the theme and their renditions from Delacroix and Bonington to Les Nabis and the expressionists in art, from the authors of Antiquity to Flaubert and Apollinaire in literature.
