Summary/Abstract: In the years after 2000, the Bulgarian viticulture experienced a serious crisis - the total areas with vineyards decreased almost three times, and the share of unsupported vineyards in the winegrowing holding growing. The vineyards in Bulgaria are being restored at a slow pace - young vines are only 4-6%, and less than 700 hectares of new vineyards are created annually. Variety of inferior quality predominates in the variety structure. The age structure of the vine plantations is seriously impaired. Average yields of wine grape vines, although growing, cannot compensate for the reduced area and the total grape production decreases. In recent years, the negative tendency to reduce the production of wine grapes has been halted, which stands at about 200-210 thousand tons.
