Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the origin of Proto-Slavic *(u)žаs- ‘to frighten, fear’. Five etymological solutions have been discussed in order to determine the most convincing among them. It turns out that the most convincing hypothesis is the one that connects PSlav. *(u)žas- with the IE root *gwes- whose primary meaning is supposed to have been ‘to destroy’ (trans.), ‘to disappear, to go out, to perish’ (intrans.). The analysis proposed in this article allows us to explain both the long grade of root vowel and the displacement of non-prefixed verb forms by prefixed ones based on well-attested morphological proportions in Slavic.
