Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the use of machine-readable corpora in historical linguistics, as well as methods elaborated for analyses of present-day language, which are widely adopted to the examination of diachronic processes. These methods enable a more thorough observation of the course and mechanisms which drive language changes. Abundance of data offered by the corpora allows for a wider use of the methods of quantitative linguistics. These in turn allow for identifying some cognitive motivations of diachronic processes as well as estimating the dynamics of the change.
