Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a contrastive analysis of the use of tenses in deontic clauses in the Polish and Spanish civil codes. Deontic clauses are understood as clauses conveying deontic meanings such as: obligativity, prohibitivity, permissivity, or immunitivity. In both civil codes, deontic clauses can be either in the present or in the future tense. The use of these tenses, however, is different in each text. The author discusses in which situations a given tense is used and analyses possible influences of the tense change on the meaning of the whole clause.
